Anyone know why tonight was John Seigenthaler's last night as Weekend Anchor on NBC Nightly News? Did he quit? Get the axe?

Nobody could figure out how to pronounce his name, so they canned him.

Perhaps he's going to do more on MSNBC and CNBC, or maybe they have some other plans for him at NBC.

I read a time back his contract was up for renewal but haven't heard anything since.

Don't worry about him, though--with his family connections, he won't be out of work for long.

i doubt you'll be seeing him anywhere in the nbc family - from tvnewser:

Unfortunately it wasn't an April Fools joke. At the end of Sunday's NBC Nightly News, John Seigenthaler announced that he is leaving the anchor desk. It came as a shock to viewers:

"This is my last broadcast on NBC Nightly News. It's been my privilege to be associated with this news organization for the last 11 years, so a few thank you's are in order.

First, thanks to my colleagues, my friends in New York and around the world for their inspiration and support. A special thanks to you the viewers for your loyalty to this network and in particular this broadcast. And thanks to my dear family -- finally, we've got our weekends back.

I'm John Seigenthaler, reporting from New York. For all of us at NBC News, good night.

From the story ... "NBC bosses decided that a newsman whose primary duties were anchoring on the weekend was a luxury they could no longer afford."

So, I guess in addition to anchoring, NBC's new hire will be required to report, shoot, edit and empty the wastebaskets on the weekends.

John is a nice guy, but you have to wonder if some other issues were in play despite pay when they let part of a rating winner go, without moving him out to an O & O. Let's not feel too sorry for the guy, more comfy paychecks are coming wherever he lands.
