I was looking at a couple of stations that's connected to Nexstar Broadcasting Group. I wanted to know if anyone of you have had experiences with them?

Stay away! Far, far away!

I know several people who work for Nexstar, which is often called "Deathstar"

Hope you get the hint. They despise overtime to the point they allow INTERNS to front stories as free labor, rather than having their reporters do it and get OT. That's one of the worst things I heard. I also heard ridiculous things about the time clock, but I'll ask my Deathstar friends and fill you in tomorrow.

It's definitely no Gannett or Hearst.

Run from *any* offer, and run Far Away.

Stay away from Sinclair, and Nexstar (which is 95% as bad).

After working for Nexstar, I pined for my old job at ClearChannel.

Let's put it this way.

Nexstar is commonly referred to as "Death Star," which is all you need to know.

I currently work for Nexstar and they are no worse than any other of the "group" owned stations.

I've been in the biz 28 years and I've worked for the best and the worst ...Gannett,Clear Channel...(in my opinion)

There are no more "family owned stations" and the glory days of no-limit "budgets" are over...it's all about the bottom line now, and these managers are required to squeeze every nickle...welcome to Corporate America!

I'd suggest getting in touch with people who work at the particular station you're interested in...don't take the word of someone on this board who "may have heard"...but if you're interested in stability, fairness, and big paychecks...you're in the wrong business.

"but if you're interested in stability, fairness, and big paychecks...you're in the wrong business."

Actually, I don't think this exists anywhere, except in our dreams.

I interviewed for a job at a Nexstar station two years ago, and the news director told me that the station usually "does more with less." I took that as "we're so cheap it's not funny," and was actually happy when I was told I didn't get the job.

Sigghhhhhhh. I work for Nexstar, have for years. They are not as bad as many other ownership groups out there. They expect your station to turn a profit, if you dont, they cut your budget till it does. THAT IS BUSINESS! That is what they are there for. Many of those here who complain about them have never actually worked for them. They are just repeating the party line and want to live in the old days of family owned stations, where you stay your whole career and make a great living. Aint happening today.

Yes, they are tight with a buck (especially with salaries) but they have taken care of me when the chips were down. There are many companies out there I wouldnt work for, Nexstar is not one of those. Yes they are deeply in debt but that debt is secured via the real estate and stations it owns. What business aint in debt nowadays? (cue the Dave Ramsey crowd)

Another way is to determine why revenues aren't what you want them to be, then taking the steps necessary to get them to that point. Sometimes that requires an investment.

Cutting budgets is the easy way out. It requires no long term strategy or plans. It requires no insight or vision. It requires no discipline.

I have to wonder if any Nexstar station has a 5 year plan? I rather doubt it (but I could be wrong). I would assume any "plan" they have goes from budget-to-budget. Maybe even quarter-to-quarter.

I have worked for Nexstar. If you need a job, and you have no other offers, take it.
A Tv station is a TV station...just the call letters change. Same gripes will come from stations with money and stations that don't.

And there are still family owned places around...you have to find them.

Whoa, a Nexstar thread that wasn't started by me making fun of the company's massive debt.

There are, sadly, worse places than Nexstar.
Not many, but Sinclair comes to mind.

I work for a family owned station.

I've been happy enough to stay here 20 years, but I'm familiar with all the crap that all of you complain about. What I mean is, it seems to fit in the universal scheme of things.

sometimes you have to take what you can get. I used to work at one of the top-performing (profit wise) Nexstar stations. and they definitely used intern packages on-air.
