Anyone know anything about this market...in terms of which stations to work for, what kind of folks they hire, pay, and what it's like to live there?

First, they hire mostly newbies and the pay reflects that. Life in Palm Springs can be expensive depending upon where you live. Desert lifestyle, very hot. Close to L.A. (kinda)

Not sure what stations are the good ones.

Echoing the previous poster. It's very hot. Like Baghdad hot. 120 in the summer. Palm Springs is a nice city as is Palm Desert. But on the market 160 paycheck you're more likely looking at Indio or Cochella.
One more thing, if someone there tries to sell you on the Salton Sea being a bonus of living there, they're lying to you. There's a lot that's cool about that area, but the Sea isn't one of them. It looks cool from the air or driving by, but it's horribly polluted.

Palm Springs is mostly gays and ultra-rich retirees.

Your paycheck won't go far unless you hook up with a sugar daddy.

Well, his sn is "Frontierman", so I doubt he'll be looking for a "sugardaddy". (Unless it's Brokeback style)

My understanding is that KESQ-ABC 3/42 owned by the St. Joseph Missouri News Press, has been the #1 station for a long time. They also own and do news for the local Fox affil. The NBC is owned by the Milwaukee Journal(Journal Broadcast Group) and has been making steady gains after struggling for many years. The CBS is locally-owned and has only existed for a few years, but they built a brand-new studio and have won the 11p time slot in some ratings periods. Their Main Anchor is Kris Long who used to be at KCAL-9 LA and ABC-15 in Phoenix. Their former Monring Weathercaster was Rich Fields, who's now the announcer for "The Price is Right". Time Warner is the cable company for almost the entire market, but will eventually be challenged by Verizon FIOS.
