I just caught the last 15 minutes on the TV Guide channel, but it airs again this afternoon. It looks about 100 times more interesting than big boobs on FOX's version.

I found it entertaining. The focused a bit to much on the female reporter wanting to lose weight. The storyline of the main male anchor being replaced by the guy from across town was dead on though. We mostly saw what's happening in the newsroom. I'd like to see more of what's going on in the field, but the tease for episode 2 looks like that will be coming.

I have worked with 3 of those people. It was pretty good. Bill Warren is a drama queen. Literally. I'll TiVO it again.

I just met a guy who worked in the Midland market...said he jacked up a liveshot pretty royally and the MN:TS crew was there and rolled on the whole thing...since he was from the competition, he's afraid he'll get shown in a bad light...granted, he HAD signed a waiver, so they can show him.

Will be interesting to see how bad it was...

Yep, it's there on DirectTV. Finally watched the entire first episode. I plan to fast forward thru all the bumps/teases so I don't hear the same sound bite 17 times in a single hour. Other than that, so far so good.

Yeah, that bugged me too. They put too much in the tease before the break, then recapped too much from the previous segment when they came back.

Surprising, really, as although they're market 159, there's actually quite a lot of news there.

The show seems to lack content.

oh gosh, where is the laughing fit smilie when you need him??? you gotta check this out! it reads like a cross between a promo for the TV series "Dallas," the "Coyote Ugly Search" and freaking the Dr. Phil House!!! {insert the smilie again!}

http://www.tvguide.com/Channel/makingnews_landing.aspx

since TV barely exists in that market, I'm entertained they actually signed on for the reality show. I can't wait to see it.

So, when you watch a reality show on the TV guide channel, do you have to watch it in a squeezed back box while the program guide scrolls by in most of the screen?

We have Dish- can I still see it?

Oh gosh I just looked again and I'm still laughing. I have to agree with the racist poster- this is a combo of white trash and extreme small market hoopla!!! hahahahahhahahhahahahahahah

Can't wait!

Pregnant Reporter, I worked there years ago. If you like drug raids and murder, this is the market for you. Odessa used to be known as a stop on the "Great heroin Trail of Texas". They also held the distinguished honor of having the highest murder rate in the USA. (per capita)

Edit: Oh, BTW, I played the game on the website. I crashed their live truck six times!

I think we can all look back to our small market days where we always thought, "Damn, this would make a good reality show." Later markets, "Damn, this would make a good sitcom." smile.gif

I watched it, I do agree that "Breaking News" was better. I wonder if the reporter, Kara, regrets some of the things she said on camera. Basically admitting she acts phony to get stories, putting down people in small towns, coming across like she believes she's "too good" for those people. That kind of rubbed me the wrong way and I wonder if she regrets saying those things on camera. Her photog seemed to be smarter about what he said.

I just hope this show doesn't perpetuate the stereotype that tv reporters are just after a story and don't give *(( about the people we're covering.

I also don't know if a horn being honked in a live shot warrants such a flip out. Everyone has had that happen, you laugh and get on with it.

Agreed. What a self-obsessed little twit. I watched about three minutes of it last night and flipped it when every other word out of her mouth had to be bleeped ... all because somebody beeped their horn as she was going live. I'm the last person you'd call a prude, but watching a woman curse like a sailor over something so stupid is really unappealing. She better hope any future employers don't see or remember her 'performance' on this show.

It seems that no matter what market you start out in you have the same type of reporters, just different faces and names. Every station has:

1.The reporter who thinks they are greater than they are.
2.The one who should be in a bigger market
3.The serious one.
4.The worrier.
5.The funny one.
6.The annoying one.
7.The funny, annoying one.
8.The one everyone dreads working with.
9.The one with the attitude.
10.The perpetual screw-up.

Some actually possess several characteristics in one complete package.

Wow!! it's really interesting to see what people are saying about the show. I was part of the original group at KWES before the station pulled the plug and the producers went to Channel 7. Luckily, I was able to leave there within a year and make my way to a really good market, but it was a wild ride there!!!!! (trust me there can be some wild news in West Texas, when it rains it pours) I think there will definately be things said by people that they wished they could take back. But, I also have to say I hope that after all of the dust settles some of the people there can somehow make this a springboard of somekind for their careers, because being after being exposed like that that's all you can hope for. Maybe future bosses will just remember the good things.

hoosiergirl
Jun 21st 2007, 01:48 AM
Unfortunately I don't think future bosses would just remember "the good things". This show gives an impression of people and that, to me, would be difficult to shake. The good news is that I don't think a lot of NDs hang out watching the TV Guide channel.

So, just so I understand this (I know it's a crappy reality show...but...) the reporter begins shooting a month-long piece. Teases the story and then shows up late for a dance session and decides to cancel the whole thing?!? She then starts talking about being frustrated with the job and the story. I really hope that was some poor editing/storytelling.

Produce man
Jun 26th 2007, 01:08 PM
No, that appears to be what happened. She also called a passing motorist a "hick country bumpkin".

If I'm a viewer in that market, I don't ever watch them again.

They hoped it would it would improve ratings.

It backfired on them.

Like a ND would ever tell a reporter that has been working on a story FOR A MONTH and has used up her work time and the photogs work time FOR A MONTH, well if you dont feel comfortable, I wont make you.
Yeah Right.

On another note, someone told me these people had to audition to be on the show. Has anyone heard anything like that?

I think it was probably more embarrassing to quit and everyone see it on this reality show than it would have been to just finish what you started and air the packages.

I don't think this show is doing any of these reporters any favors. Maybe the male main anchor and former main anchor will come out unscathed, the rest....yikes. Being on that show has to be embarrassing based on what comes out of their mouths.

I've seen 3 episodes.
It's 15 minutes of content stretched over and hour. Yuck.
Kara is a self-obsessed twit, and she's the GOOD reporter I've seen.

What REALLY BUGS me though, is the image of the reporters being "chaffeured" (sp?) by the photogs. I believe the producers of "MN: TS" asked them to sit this way so it would be easier to get sots from the reporters, but sheesh.....

I just saw about 8 episodes strung together over the weekend before they show the new ones Monday night.

Awesome!

1. Yes, it is every station you've ever worked at or will work at (Personality A + Personality B + etc. etc.)

2. That theme music...TexMex twang interspersed with 70s news teletype/piano key plunking--hilarious!

3. Now the rest of world will understand how a TV station owned by a car dealership can run short of working vehicles.

Jul 16th 2007, 09:15 AM
Roy, what were you smoking? Only 3 or 4 episodes aired so far! tongue.gif
Of course, it probably seems to be 8 episodes after you watch the same video 15 different times in the bump-in and bump-outs. It's like they shot enough video for an hour show and have to stretch it into a series.

Love this show, it really takes you back to the smaller mkt days with the enthusiasm for this job and the competition to get THE story for your escape tape. The production values are pretty weak, but they did a good job of developing the characters. I'm not sure how much of Bill getting taken of the anchor desk the production company knew about before the show started up but it really added some emotion and realism to what people face in this profession. I am also surprised about the access that the production crew had to channel 9 during that whole process.

Produce Man, I'd like to know more about what the "cast" thinks about how they were portrayed in the series...maybe there will be a wrap up show but in the meantime I hope you will keep us posted...

Update! I talked to friend from KOSA again. They were much more open this time. They told me that the producers ask very pointed questions , aimed at pitting people against each other. If you've watched the show you've seen this. I assked the person why I hadn't seen much of them on the show, they said everytime they asked them a question, the response aws always "We're a team". The producers knew this person wasn't going to play ball, and was pretty much dropped from the show. This person also told me that what they did to Bill Warren was despicable. "They made him look like a pathetic old man, and he's not". (And I worked with Bill for awhile across the street about 10 years ago. He was a drama queen, but a pretty good guy)

But here's what got me...nobody got paid! Not the "characters" or the station. They were told that the publicity would be payment enough.

Finally, he told me that if they ever approached my station to keep the hell away from them. What they did to moral at KOSA may be impossible to repair.

If I hear more, I'll post it!

My bad. Morale. From what I hear they didn't create an ethics or morals problem. It's just that they set them all against each other. When they left, and the shows started airing, they realized what others had said about them behind their backs.

Making News: Texas Style didn't portray everyone like they probably would’ve preferred, but I was impressed with the show myself. In all honesty, the show left off on a great note about the small, local TV station that cared about news and ended up in first place. I can obviously see that KOSA will not be welcoming back that crew with open arms, but will there be another Making News;________________?

Oh yes. They're currently contacting other news departments, one of which I'm familiar with. They seem to be hitting small markets in the south. They're looking for the "tornado-victim" type of markets. You know, the ones where every time a tornado hits town, they get the guy in the wife-beater on and the warm beer in his hand. They want to not only set up the newsies, but belittle the local gentry.

Any idea where the crew will be shooting the second season of Making News:______________??

NDP
Sep 24th 2007, 05:52 AM
Greetings, MediaLine. It's a real treat to see the spirited discussions our show has generated. I'd like to take this opportunity to answer some of the questions posted here, and maybe clear up some misunderstandings.

First, yes, there will be a second season of the show. Second, yes, we are currently looking for the station; we don't know where we'll end up and welcome all suggestions. Third, the station had a contract and will get paid - a nominal fee to be sure, but it is money.

Fourth, a word about the re-caps: the TV Guide Network insisted upon them, because their hours consist of such lengthy commercial breaks - we were able to make them somewhat shorter by the end of the year and expect the recaps to be shorter still next year, but in this age of TiVo and dvr, I hope it's not such a hardship to have to fast-forward through the breaks.

Most important, I am distressed if not completely surprised to hear that anyone at the station has bad feelings about their experience or our time there. In any long-term working relationship - and we were at KOSA for 6 months - there are bound to be frictions and problems, but on the whole, we had an unequivocally positive time at KOSA, and I believe the station employees did too. The show was seen nationally, and people from around the country saw how a station operates and works on a daily basis. What's more, those producers and reporters and anchors who are trying to advance their careers did themselves a world of good by getting the exposure. As for 'conflict' - the heart of drama - while we did look for it in our filming, it was not paramount in our mind to 'stir things up.' (I do know that one of our field producers may have pushed a little hard in interviews to stir up conflict until he was told, by us, in no uncertain terms, to scale back.) But at no time did any of the participants in the show express reservations to us that were not immediately acted upon. In other words, if they asked us to stop filming something, we did; if they asked us not to use something we had filmed, we did not use it.

And finally - Bill Warren. I would disagree with anyone who characterized our portrait of him as a 'pathetic old man'. In fact, we considered him the soul of the show, and many viewers felt the same way. His story may have seemed a sad one at first, but ultimately it was very inspiring. We should all handle our adversities with such dignity, class, and good humor.

Nick..I for one...loved the show. It showed these people as the humans they are...and showed the real politics and ups and downs we face in tv news. Good and bad..and how we bounce back from them.

On a side note..for the second season...Id like to see you guys go to a big market newsroom. It would be fun to show how competitive and cutthroat it is in the big leagues as well, and the challenges they face. Also..there is more NEWS going on...I think the show would have a faster pace and more compelling footage and storylines in a bigger city newsroom.

I got hooked on Making News after the first episode, along with a few friends who aren’t in the business. The shorter recaps were bearable and I’m definitely looking forward to the second season. I’ve heard other wise, but I really hope that you consider a market in upstate New York, or at least somewhere that gets a considerable amount of snow. Centralizing around a runner-up station that made it to the top was great, but it would be nice to see a station with more than one live truck, since there’s always something that goes on when you go live.

Other than that, it’s a great show. Can’t wait for season two.

Nick,

Glad to hear from you, but I've no reason to believe the person I talked to at KOSA would lie about the experience. People there feel they were manipulated, and that they were being set up. Granted, those involved should know how to act when on camera and mic'd up. But these kids are young, and have probably watched too much "Real World" type programming, and don't know better.

As to Bill Warren, yes, you made him look good on the last show, but you can't deny that you put him in a bad light in every other episode until then.

Also, I find your choice of camera shots interesting regarding the Correra girl, especially the shot on her apartment couch. The low angle seemed to bring attention to he legs, which was not a flattering shot. Plus, she's eating. In other words, "look at the unhappy fat girl".

In my opinion, nobody really came out looking good. Jay and Tatum seemed to skate by, but the others did not fare as well.

And from otheres I have talked to, you are targetting similar parts of the country for your next season.

Just some thoughts.

Hello All,

I'm so glad to have found such a core of impassioned viewers!

I love the idea of upstate New York -- rest assured, whereever we end up in Season 2, I really want to cover the whole country with this show before we're done. (May we be lucky enough to have so many seasons...!) -- In part because I genuinely feel that local news is such a fascinating lens through which to look at America, and I really have no idea how different, if at all, the news will look in, say, Schenectady from Odessa. Is it different? How different? And in what ways is it fundamentally the same? And if it is the same, has something been lost if we're all just becoming so homogenized? (Granted, not all of this would be covered by a TV show on cable TV, but they're questions I would definitely want to ask as we set out....)

As for Bill Warren - what can I say? We may just have to agree to disagree on this one, Produce Man. I definitely thought he came through somewhat heroically, not just in episode 13 where he did such a fantastic job in the stand-up, but in many other episodes, like the one where he told the story about hearing the oil pumps when he was a young boy, or when he went out to cover T. Boone Pickens, or even the one where he did the charity race. I wouldn't say we put him 'in a bad light' in these episodes, and though our intention probably shouldn't enter into it, we certainly didn't intend to make him look bad. I am sorry for his sake if you felt we were trying to do so.

But that raises an interesting point. We definitely were conscious of 'protecting people from themselves' -- ie, keeping people from looking bad, physically or any other way... (I'm curious about that interview shot you noticed of Melissa Correa; we actually ended up blowing up quite a few of those shots for just that reason!) But how much is it our responsibility to do so? I don't really know the answer to that question, but it's something we grapple with all the time (and something that obviously news directors deal with as well - maybe that's why we were drawn to the subject).

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts -- I find them all really interesting, and food for thought as we scout for season #2.

Thanks for checking in, Gary!

They did the whole setup for the new sports show, only to show him fail and get hiss ass chewed out. I saw it coming, though. He bit off more than he could chew.

Yeah, the producer kid didn't come off looking good, but that's the way it is sometimes. He screwed up, made rookie mistakes and that's how he was shown. It happens all the time when you're learning the ropes. While embarrassing, that's the way it happened and that's how it should be portrayed.
It made me kringe a little because I could see the way he was going there was going to be a train wreck. We've all been there at some point. Bad flashbacks graemlins/eusa_doh.gif

In all honesty, the show left off on a great note about the small, local TV station that cared about news and ended up in first place. I can obviously see that KOSA will not be welcoming back that crew with open arms, but will there be another Making News;________________?Sorry this happens at a big market station in cleveland that makes this show look tame & professional by any standards: 19 Action News

Nick thanks for comming to Medialine and chatting with us. I did find the recaps, re-hashing of sound bites annoying. I did like Bill's personality. But you did paint him in a somewhat bad light with the music slection when you would cut to him. The relationship between the full figured reporter and the first year reporter was a bit baited it seemed. I am pretty sure that the male reporter has bigger ones than he was made out to have. But over all I liked it and look foward to the next one. thanks

Bad flashbacks graemlins/eusa_doh.gif I blame the News Director for this. No Manager worth his weight in salt would let a relatively new producer take on such a big project and not be there when it airs. What's the matter Jose, couldn't spend one evening at the station to watch A BRAND NEW SHOW hit your air?

It's funny - I did hear other comments like yours about Bill's music, but our intention was really to have fun with Bill, in the way he deprecated himself - not to make fun of him from the outside. He was really a fun person to work with, and like I said, we considered him the soul of the show.

Thanks for watching, and I hope you like next year!

The theme song had a good Moo, but it needed more cowbell.

The producers called my station and asked if we were interested in being the next season. They asked questions that were soooooo looking for controversy.

What station/region are you at?
I'm guessing your station turned them down?

I liked the show, but some sub-plots I just tivo'd through. Say the charity basketball game.
My suggestion...Alaska...who doesn't want to know what it's like to do the news in Alaska! Or maybe Hawaii?
My other idea, go to a market big enough to have an I-team or at least a consumer reporter. One issue was the stories they were working were kinda dull...except the confession guy.
Also the battle between two competitive stations is more exciting than the "live truck's in the shop" stuff.
All in all, I liked the show overall..I thought Melissa was the most compelling character. I look forward to the next.

That's funny...I was thinking Alaska too.

Plus on most maps it's just south of Texas!
