I think no matter where you live, you'll end up seeing this guy lurking around:

The best areas in the city are the West End/Hillsboro area, Green Hills, Bellevue, Old Hickory and Inglewood. Also the area between Antioch and Brentwood ("Brentioch") isn't too bad. Also, there are an increasing number of apartments and condos downtown. Only disadvantage is that there's not much retail there yet. It's coming, albeit slowly.
If you're looking in the 'burbs, Williamson County is the most expensive. Rutherford is cheaper but going up.
Channel 2 (ABC) is on Murfreesboro Road and not in the best neighborhood. Channel 4 (NBC) is in West Nashville. Channel 5 (CBS)is downtown. Channel 17 (Fox) is in MetroCenter but off the main roads in that area, which is good because some of the neighborhoods closer to those main roads aren't safe at night.

What type of lifestyle do you want? If you want to be in the trendy part of town, then go with Green Hills or the West End/Hillsboro area near Vanderbilt. Prices there, of course, are higher than they should be, but if you're wanting to be in the middle of the bigtime social scene then you'll want to look this direction.
The so-called "Brentioch" area is a quality place to get a decent yet affordable apartment (as long as you're west of Nolensville Pike). My wife lived in one of several complexes which is in this area that's also known as Nipper's Corner.
If you're looking for an older house in a well established neighborhood then Crieve Hall's the way to go. I have lived in the area (which is sandwiched between Berry Hill and Brentwood in South Davidson County) for the past five years. It's a '50s era neighborhood with lots of trees and larger lots with ranch homes that are actually affordable.
Bellevue's the way to go if you're going to be working at Channel 4. As Diplomat said, 2's in a bad part of town, 5 is in the heart of downtown (so interstate access is important), and FOX 17's in an area that's a giant business park but it's next to one of the least desirable neighborhoods in town.
Williamson and Rutherford Counties will both mean at least a 35-45 minute commute into town. At least with both of those the interstate construction is virtually done for the next 20 years or so.
Wherever you settle, be ready to not be able to buy wine in grocery stores... or on Sunday.

And Divah, I'm sorry, but you've shown one of my pet peeves.
Only use an apostrophe when your subject is possessive or when using a contraction.
Incorrect: Neighborhood's
Correct: Neighborhoods
Incorrect: "Bellevues the way to go..."
Correct: "Bellevue's the way to go..." (correct because it's used as a contraction)

Well I guess someone should just shoot me and put my stupid contraction using butt out of it's...or its...or itz...misery!!
Thanks to the people who actually got past my world ending grammar mistake and offered some helpful advice. If I stand in the corner for 10 minutes and write "neighborhoods" on the board...maybe someone else will also give me some insight about Nashville....
Honestly...it seems all too often people on this board are too busy finding fault instead of just having a discussion or giving helpful insight about the topic....

Sorry, divah ... in the absence of any other context, we can only judge you by your writings here. And I cringed too when I saw the apostrophe. Minor mistake? Sure, especially since it's just a message board. But mistakes like that directly affect your credibility. Your angry response to any kind of correction also makes one wonder how you might operate in a newsroom as well.

Okay, so maybe we're being too hard on her. Maybe she's not really a journalist and shouldn't be held to a higher standard. What's your job, Tvdivah?

Divah, I had no animosity toward you when I wrote that post.
In fact, I posted the "Incorrect / Correct" items to serve as examples of how the rule is to be followed.
Taking the time to do that shows more care for the written word than it does hostility toward a mistake.

And if you are looking for a cool church (I know, cool church?!? There are some?!?) Yes! Try The Anchor (http://www.theanchorfellowship.com/) in Downtown Nashville. My brother in law is the pastor. He calls it a church that doesn't suck. Check it out. It's a lot of fun!
