This mornings on-going, never ending wall to wall coverage of the supposed gas leak in NYC is such a farce. I'm watching Faux and so far they have checked with each of their street reporters about 12 times each and all of them are saying exactly the same thing..

" we are here at XXX and we dont smell it here but we have talked to XXX who says it is nothing harmful ok back to you".

Anchor: "Ok we just got off the phone with XX from the NYC Fire Department who says they cant find anything"

Co-anchor:" we just talked to officials from Dept of Homeland Sec. who says there are no indications of terrorism and has no other info".

Anchor: "lets go to XXX from our affiliate in NYC."
Street reporter:" We are at XXX and theres no smell here, but locals are blaming New Jersy, I can report that there is no panic here".

Anchor: " we have talked to numorus officials and they have nothing to report...sorta like us but we will stay on this story forever, lets talk to the weather desk":

Weather anchor:" Well the smell is gone from here, the Fire Depart. has nothing to report".

"Bill O Reilly is checking in, Bill what can you tell us?"

Bill:" Nothing, I have no information".

Ok so you are waiting for a statement from the Mayors office. Fine, cut to him when he bothers to show up. Isn't there any other story going on in the world? This type of incident happens alot. In the DC area, they had one a year or so back, it was an over pressure problem with the equipment that puts mercapsum in the gaslines but it didnt require wall to wall coverage even tho it covered a five county area!!! Faux, you need to remember that NYC is just a city, its not the center of all things.

Last minute edit: At least O'Reilly had the guts to admit its not much of a story! He seemed a little flustered at Fauxs level of coverage too.

Faux, you need to remember that NYC is just a city, its not the center of all things. Well, DUH. DC is the center of all things.

I didn't see it. But it sounds like this weekend's coverage of the avalanche -- until it became clear there was no loss of life.
A somewhat related question... are the cable channels calling the same people the affiliates are to get updates? I was thinking during the avalanche coverage -- don't the people they're doing phoners with have something more important to do? Isn't it kind of dangerous and a pain if six-to-eight stations, plus local radio and papers are calling dispatchers? Especially outside major markets?
Hell, I get snapped at if I wake someone up during beat checks...

An open letter to the people at Fox NYC:

Dearest Minions of Rupert:

Your town has some good pizza, but the rest of the nation could give two craps that your town smells funny. Besides, we think you guys smell funny on a good day.

xxoo,

I thought it was a combination of the stench of New Jersey and a strong wind.

I'm no fan of Fox News Channel, but let's be fair. CNN was giving it wall to wall coverage too.

I only saw Fox News because it was on at the gym where I work out.

This just screams out for some kinda combo of HDTV and Smell-o-vision.

the anchor on an npr newscast quoted some official who said he's waiting for "the gas to pass." gotta love a news story that gives npr a chance to back into a fart joke!
