OK, I'm going out of my market for my first pick. Check out WJLA's Roberta Baskin's effort called Small Smiles.

Roberta is one of those who makes me proud to be a reporter.

I can't find the video now(maybe station figured out it was bad tv)...but I've got a 'worst' sweeps. Station did "Abduction Live" where reporter staged an abduction. It was laughable at best, white van pulls up behind reporter while she's talking with anchors, guy jumps out and 'tries' to take her. She uses her just learned "self defense" Long story short...it was painful to watch...and very unrealistic all the way down to the girl spanking the 'abductor' right before running away. Gave false sense of protection for any woman watching. graemlins/face_banghead.gif

Yes, WIS specifically, which may make it easier to find the video. www.wistv.com. (http://www.wistv.com.)
It was painful to watch, and it was HILARIOUS when she SPANKED the guy who was trying to "abduct" her after she "wrestled him to the ground". I didn't learn that spank move in karate class.
There were promos on this for several days leading up to it, where she would talk about the fact that there was going to be an attempted abduction of her "sometime" in the coming days, and she was nervous because she wouldn't know when it was going to happen.
Oh...I don't know...maybe it's going to happen DURING a newscast, when you're out in a vacant parking lot with a wireless mic, wireless IFB and two TV cameras pointed at you? HUGE SURPRISE!
I don't know whose idea it was, but it's the kind of thing that's making me question our business.

The video link is to the right. It's the one labeled "Abduction LIVE"
I particularly enjoyed the part where she was smiling and saying things like "Oh, I have no clue what's going to happen!" as she walked straight for that van. graemlins/eusa_doh.gif

I think the irony of response on this thread shows what kind of shape the industry is in! graemlins/face_banghead.gif

Man, I wish there was a link for the 6 MINUTE chupacabra story that KENS in San Antonio ran with the first night of sweeps!
They followed that one up with the "do you know what we found on the movie theater seats" that every consultant is pimping as an original idea!

Reminds me of a story that aired on a station in the Midwest a few years ago. It was a segment entitled, "Live Crime". They were going to show how fast a car thief could break into a car and steal it. Using a former car thief, the idea was to have him smash the window, jump into the car, peel the steering column and start the car. Before the "live shot" he pre-loosened some essential parts of the steering column so it wouldn't take so long to start the car. The station did a three camera shoot on the story. One camera inside the car, and two on the outside. Rehersals looked great. 3, 2, 1, your live.......Guy smashes the window...three camera switch...good effects..glass flying all over....cut to inside shot,....guy jumps behind the wheel....tears off the plastic around the ignition swith...good nat sound...switching to all three cameras....guy pops the ignition lock...inserts screwdriver.....turns.....NOTHING!!! Guy say's "What tha *****" live on TV. (Battery dead in car from leaving door open half the night)

Where I was in Texas, chupacabras were a normal thing. If we went 2 weeks without a story about one, it was unusual.

So our station recently hired a new main anchor. For a sweeps piece, we ran a story he did at his former station. We pretty much ran the exact same story, changed a couple of tracks to reflect our viewing area. AND the format we ran, had his stations CG's and graphics on it. Seems to be causing a debate on ethics, especially on our local paper's discussion board.
