When making an over the shoulder graphic or full page graphic... if you had the choice would you use a mug shot or a photo given to you by the family (that is much more flattering)?
The reason I ask is... close to where I live the wife of a sheriff shot the wife of a cop. I noticed on the news that the head shot of the shooter was a pretty head shot...not the usual distraught mug shot. My first thought was it was given to them by the police to "protect" one of their own... but the station using it said that it was given to them by the family. It makes me wonder if a mug shot was even given to them.
It appears to me from past reports/stories that the cops do protect their own... they provide little information if it involves an officer.
I don't recall seeing many "officer" mug shots.
Maybe Fearmonger can provide insight (without posting a link to his blog.

In this business, the creedo is: "There is no such thing as a bad mug shot." See below for examples:

Both pictures are part of the story. Use them both in some way.

You left out Wynonna Judd's infamous "Chucky" mugshot.

I'll bet even now... less than a year later... that most people here do not remember that this was Delay's "mug shot".

Sure... but can you show me mug shots of police who have been busted or arrested for crimes? (or mug shots of their family members?)

Here's one:

And the story to go with it. Clcky clicky (http://www.arlingtonva.us/Departments/Police/news/article.asp?ID=315)
Note the source of this picture, and press release. The Arlington PD themselves. Interesting, no?
I guess if you're a bad cop you don't want to work there.

Getting back to the story in the OP, from what I understand from friends at one of the stations, the picture shown was the only one available...there was no mug provided.

Interesting. If it were a citizen with no ties to the PD do you think her mug shot would have been provided?
I guess it is natural to want to protect your own. I still don't think it is right.

UL, a belated thanks for Wynonna's mugshot. It scared many a Nashvillian.
The moral of this thread is--don't do anything to get arrested. :D
