How long did it take you to find your second job?

I've been told it generally takes 6-8 months to find a job, so I'm starting early...about 10 months before my contract is up.

Just curious! Thanks!

My second job found me, actually.

The Assistant News Director from the shop across the street recruited me to produce the 6pm, which was what I was doing at my first job.

Times tend to be shorter for producers, though.

Nine months. But that was in 1977.

9 months. Then 3 years for the third job.

Took about 4 months to go from my first job at a small-town, low-power TV/radio station, to a station in a 130s market.

Then took about 13 months of active searching (spent 2 1/2 years total at second station) to land in a 60s market. All as a news reporter.

I got lucky... I told a news contact I had from Station #1 that I was resigning. She then called the Asst. ND at Station #2 and told him to give me a call. Within 2 hours, the new job was in the works. Quite a relief since I was leaving with no place to go!

well, i got hired at job #1 while I was still in college. I went on air in October as a part time reporter and graduated in May as weekend anchor. I had no contract as it was Lubbock, a very small market.

I started sending tapes out in May and got hired in October in Waco to anchor the morning show.

I didn't check this market out, nor the station. There was no "google" or "medialine" in 1992. It was a total $hithole run by a nutty old secretary who screwed her boss, married her boss, inherited his TV station and then ran it into the ground.

IF YOU'RE NOT DEAD YET, SUE MAYBORN, YOU'LL TAKE MANY CAREERS WITH YOU TO YOUR GRAVE, YOU HAG.

Ahem. anyway, that's my answer. I got recruited to Austin, thank God, and was gone less than a year later.

Three months…and counting. Anyone want to hire a good reporter from a 100ish market for a 20-60 market?

I am finding the second job search is harder. Good luck!

Finding the second, third etc. job is always much harder than you think.
Especially with the overload of people going into this business; competition is fierce.
Just try to be the best you can be at whatever job you do.

1st job....interviewed at 3pm and was working at 5pm. I worked there for 8 years and left and was recruited back after 6 months by new GM to run the production units. Gave me back all my senority and a nice bonus. Let me fire anyone I didn't like and let me move into the station owned condo for a year.

My first job was only part time, so I'm not going to count that. From my first full time job to my second full time job, it took me about 4 months. I moved from a 130s market to a 50s market. I actually met the News Director that hired me at an RTNDA convention.

My second job took about a year to snag(I was still working at Job #1 but sending out tapes). It was a tough sell because we didn't have "LIVE" capablities....and every ND wanted proof I could go LIVE. So nearing the 8 month mark or so...I buddied up with graffix and the anchor and we staged a couple Live Shots with supers and all. It looked real....kinda felt bad because it was staged...but I got tired of ND's not wanting to risk the hire without proof of Live Shot experience. So technically, after I started sending out Fake Live shots with my pkgs...I got a job in about 4 months. Now I'll never have to fake it again! MY GIRLFRIENDS ON THE OTHER HAND? ....JUST KIDDING. I'm a stud. Good Luck. graemlins/cheers2.gif

I was fine. I wouldn't have "faked" a Live shot if I didn't think I could handle it. Matter of fact, the ND sent me out with their Noon crew to do a live 'VO' the day I interviewed. She offered the job when I got back to the station.

Here's my short history (been in biz for 7.5 years):

1st Job: took 2 months (one offer)...Sports photog, reporter, sometime fill-in anchor in 120's mkt.

2nd Job: about three weeks(multiple offers)...Weekend sports anchor, 120's mkt.

3rd Job: about four months (2 offers, multiple nibbles)...Sports photog, reporter, anchor, 70's mkt.

4th Job: about a month (multiple good offers)...Sports reporter, fill-in anchor, top 20.

5th Job: about a month (multiple good offers)...Weekend sports anchor, top 5.

I've done a lot of moving, criss-crossing the country a couple times, but it's been worth it because I love what I do.

Why? Because nobody wants to do our job, you don't get to be on Teevee that way.

exactly. I had a top 5 ND tell me: "you wanna get to a top 5 market fast? become a producer...you will move up faster."

For every producer job at my top 20 station.. maybe 5 resumes.
reporter? 200.

Its not that hard to have multiple offers as a producer.
