Can anyone recommend a good tripod hard case for airplane travel. Not in the cabin, obviously, but to send as baggage.

Yes, try a hardcase that is used to protect golf clubs. Works great!

Made for a tripod, not golf clubs. Worth the extra money.

Don't ever put an unprotected tripod in the belly of a plane.

If money is no object, get the more expensive one.
If you're on a budget, think outside the box and get one like this for $50.

Michael I don't recall approving any travel for you. So don't go spending any station money on a tri-pod case.
And we're gonna need you to come in on your day off... K? Good see ya then!

You can buy locks now that are TSA Approved that they can unlock and then relock it if they need to search your bag. I just did that two weeks ago...

We bought a rolling golf club case some years back. It was fine for about five trips then it started to fall apart. We also have a few classic tripod cases and they just soldier on, year after year.
A dedicated tripod case should only cost about twice the price of a golf club case. That should be around a c note and some change. Not a lot to guarantee the safety of a good tripod.
I'm not going to put a $5000 hot pod into a $50 case again.
The cheap case will work for a while but if you travel much then you will be replacing in before long.
There's a saying that people on a budget buy everything twice.
Spend the extra fifty bucks and get the real thing IMHO.
