(No, this is not a political thread tongue.gif )
That was the tease and the lead in on NBC. It was followed by something like "that's the assesment of..." Isn't one of the first rules of broadcast journalism not to quote someone without attribution in a lead-in? It sounds as if Brian Williams is making that claim. Where's Mervin Block?!?

unfortunately that's one of the most overused (and lamest) writing crutches in the business.
"Eating Tomatoes will kill your family. That's the claim of group XYZ...."
anytime the 2nd sentence starts with "That's..." it's usually one of these lame scripts.

According to many newswriting rules, it is a no-no. But this isn't a case of slander. Now, if he had started with, '((Some political figure)) is a gay balloon sucker. That's the latest from his political foe.' Then he could be in real trouble.
Beyond all that, it works for Williams and Nightly.
As for Block, he is constantly deriding the writing on Nightly.

Never thought it was slander, just a no-no. "Gay balloon sucker" Does that mean he is gay and sucks balloons or he sucks gay balloons? Block would want clarification! ;)

The worst offender is CNN, using question marks to get away with saying anything, no matter how little evidence exists.
"Trans-Fats: Biggest Threat to Your Health Ever?"
"Pope Benedict: Out-of-Touch Hate-Monger?"
"Speaker Pelosi: Greatest Speaker in History?"
"Iraq Study Group: Smartest People Ever?"
"Critics of Climate Change Taking Bribes from Oil Companies?"
