on CNN's Paula Zahn show tonite, they're running a piece on the Rutgers team news conference and reaction on campus to Imus.

throughout the piece, players are saying they're willing to meet with him and hear his side of the story before passing judgment.

yet the banner up the whole time said "Rutgers Fires Back: Players Take Shots at Imus"

NOWHERE IN THE PIECE did a player take a shot at Imus.
in fact, they said just the opposite.

who comes up with these lame labels & banners?
do they even LISTEN to the story beforehand?
and why does every story have to HAVE a banner anyway?

Maybe they forgot to put a question mark at the end?

and why does every story have to HAVE a banner anyway?Because schmucks think that "the extra branding" will "remind the viewer" what station they are watching.

But in all reality, it only crowds the screen, cheapens the video, and enhances the chances for errors.

But what can you expect? Fox News does it. CNN does it. BSNBC does it. CNBC does it. So why can't the locals?

I've NEVER seen these types of "modern" forms of "storytelling" on World News Tonight.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think 60 Minutes even uses Chryons.

And their theme music? "tick..tick..tick..tick...tick..." :D

And their theme music? "tick..tick..tick..tick...tick..." :D Yeah, but look at the lousy ratings they get.

Think how much better they'd do with some flashy updated graphics, snappy music bed and some 20-something lookers to anchor the show. I'm surprised they haven't hired some consultants to help them jazz things up a bit.

I've still yet to hear from a producer, EP or ND who can tell me why these stupid banners are used.

come on, you know your station is using them.
who's making that call?
and why?

24 Hour Cable nets use them because their viewers are even worse channel surfers than people who commit to a regular news show.

The banner gives you enough information to let the viewer decide if he or she is interested in the current story.

One of the best banners I've ever seen was during the Anna Nicole Smith saga...it was Fox..

Killer Fridge?

Another reason to hate banners...they cover up the breasts.... :D

IMO, banners are only efficient during breaking news situations (and I mean REAL breaking news situations, not something that happened at 3, but wasn't hitting the air until 5).

And people wonder why ratings are so low. The answers are right there in our faces, but it seems to take 3 separate layers of management, a group of consultants, and audience research to tell us what we already know.

Lord have mercy.

Theory is, you're scoping the news channels, you're gonna register at some point. Only takes 5 minutes for one of those nice juicy 15 minute Nielsen blocks.

The banner proxies for the fact that you probably aren't going to maintain compelling video 100 percent of the time, even at a national level.
