Hi all...
I have a friend who is a producer who wants to look for a job. He asked me what he should have ready but I could not come up with an answer. What does a producer send in other than a resume? Show run-downs? scripts? tapes of scripts? What's the typical procedure for hiring a producer?
Thanks!

Send a copy of a show, preferably a good one.

No, they want to see last night's show. Everybody lucks out with a killer show now and then. They want to see what you can do on any given day. Take last night's aircheck, edit out wx, spx, and commercials.
Send it in. Tell him good luck

well, "last night's show" is whenever you decide you aired a good show. it's not a pop quiz when you see a job ad that asks for last night's show. if last night's show blew, produce a stellar one today and mail it tomorrow. then that's last night's show.
I never really understood the 'last night show' thing to begin with. Any monkey can stack a newscast. It's when hell breaks loose, breaking news during the show or some huge event that show producers really shine and stackers are left out.

Well, try submitting an aircheck that's 3 weeks old and see how far you get.
The poster's friend is probably looking in a small market. Hell generally doesn't break loose in small markets very often.

Send in a recent show. Edit out the commercials. Drop tape in mail. Simple enough. Don't send in the loaded up show with all the bells and whistles; NDs and EPs want to see what a producer can do when nothing is happening. That's when producers make their money.

Me thinks one relatively recent will do just fine. If it grabs their attention...then they will ask for LAST NIGHTS

Last night's show, sans commercials, weather and sports as well as packages. Just intros and tags.

Someone call the media.
I agree w/CKMD.

Then you need to get a job at another station. Yes, it's thankless, but most jobs (in any industry) are. As far as pay goes, I'm not getting rich, but I live comfortably.
