Federal indictment alleges Mitchell M. Maund bilked station of $200,000 in fraudulent credit card charges.
The former vice president and general manager of WJCL-TV was indicted in federal court Wednesday on charges he defrauded the station and its parent company of more than $200,000.
The 48-count indictment accuses Mitchell M. Maund of using WJCL credit cards to pay for personal expenses such as jewelry, airline tickets and cruise tickets. Included in the indictment are 47 counts of mail fraud and one count of wire fraud.
Lisa Godbey Wood, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, announced the indictment in a news release issued Wednesday night.
The indictment is the result of a joint federal and state investigation into financial irregularities at the ABC affiliate, according to the statement. The crimes occurred over four years from March 2002 through April 2006.
Dave Tillery, who identified himself as the acting station manager, said he could not comment on the charges because he just started working at the station as a consultant three weeks ago.
He deferred instead to Piedmont Television Holding CEO Paul Brissette. A woman who answered the telephone at Brissette's office said he does not talk to reporters.
The indictment alleges Maund used the U.S. mail and interstate wire communications to carry out his alleged scheme to defraud the TV station.
Each of the 48 counts carries a maximum penalty upon conviction of not more than 20 years in jail and a fine of not more than $250,000.
