I nearly fell off the treadmill tonight looking at Larry King... and the cutline up for the entire backgrounder pkg says:

"Barbaro Put To Death"

Doesn't that conjur up visions of Timothy McVeigh or Saddham Hussein? Wow! It's a horse and the horse was lucky they didn't "put him to death" right there on the track.

I didn't hear the package because I didn't have my headphones ... but the visuals didn't match the cutline.... we saw a concerned vet, caring trainers, etc.

Whoever put the CG up must have a viewpoint or was trying to evoke a certain reaction or just doesn't get horse racing.

If "making people look" is "good TV news" then this was great... but I thought it was out of line for the double meaning it implies. Dead? Yes. But "Put to Death" implies some kind of punishment which would be entirely wrong.

I have pets. I love animals, but if I needed it "put down," I wouldn't consider it "Putting It To Death" by any means.

I also thought CBS putting "2003-2007" under his photo was over the top. Again, let me state I dig animals - but they are not PEOPLE.

OK - go ahead and flame my azz. I deserve it for speaking out against equal human treatment of anything with a tail. :D

Yeah, probably not the best choice of words on their part.

I mean, would you have said that Saddam Hussein was "put down" or "euthanized"?

One thing that I don't get is people still saying an animal that was euthanized was "destroyed". Was the body blown to bits?

But was it "completely destroyed" - or only partially?

I love animals; I hate euphemisms. I think it's far more appropriate to say "put to death" as opposed to "put down". I mean, the horse was killed. I also hate to hear people say that someone "has passed" or "passed over" or "gone to the Lord"...they DIED.
