Video (http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_157101638.html) from live feed on station's website. Kudos to the reporter for keeping her composure (for the most part), but I didn't like the whole "Look what happened to us and I ALMOST DIED!" live shot later in the day. Glad the photog in the truck was OK (altough he was transported for back strain). Ironic, though that the story was about possible increase in cab fare and the accident involved a cab.

So, would you have kept going or stop the report to see if everyone's OK?

I would have immediately interrupted the live shot, explained why, and gone to check on those involved in the crash. If the shooter wanted to follow and see what I was doing, fine. But there was no reason to continue with that particular live shot; there was no brain surgery being conducted that I could see.

I thought it was handled in an appropriate fashion.

IE no 3 minute pkg the next day about what went through her mind, complete with an on-set debrief with the anchors and second by second graphics. From the link posted above, it looks like the station did none it - and thank goodness for that.

I'd lift the hold on hiring per diem writers and/or actually use a male at some point in some role during their weekend morning newscasts tongue.gif

I want to know why she was framed up to a scaffold...and not the street.

That's the first thing I noticed when I saw the shot. And if the photog framed it to where the street would be visible...we'd probably get to see the wreck.

((GASP! THE HORROR! graemlins/face_banghead.gif ))

As for the live shot, I would have interrupted it as well to check on everyone. As for the location, I agree with the questioning of putting her in front of the scaffolding...would rather have been in a cab or in front of the dispatch building or something like that (unless that WAS the dispatch building under construction...but I doubt it).

[/QB]No kidding. It's not like someone threw a microphone at her or anything.

That was interesting. I am sure she would have incurred the producer's wrath had she come out of the SOT and referred directly to the accident. She may have even been suspended for "interrupting the flow" of the newscast!

God forbid we break format to report on real breaking news that's literally right at our feet.

I spent the first 19 seconds thinking, "Up here...camera's here...hey, over here!"

The reporter addressed the situation in a post over on TVSpy.

The video we are seeing is the "live ingest" back at the station. She was reading her VO script until the SOT rolled. She apparently had just been in a serious car accident and that's why it took her a few seconds to recover and finish the Continued Vo portion of the script.

I thought she handled it as well as she could given the circumstances.

Seriously, look at the crash. It's nothing. I've seen hail to more damage to a car than that.

Here! ...Now Back to You! at W W Whit'D'ey!Ha ha, I hadn't actually watched the video until I saw this picture, I used to work with her. She always did a good job for me on my shows.

And that's not the first time by any means that a live truck and Chicago was involved in a traffic accident. I once had a reporter do a live with the van as a backdrop at a completely different site because the live truck got hit halfway to the live.

We just went live from the accident scene, used the generic live bug, didn't use any locator supers, and treated it like a newsroom. graemlins/icon_kidra.gif
