View Full Version : So what if Michael's VJ thing is right?

When ever we argue against Michael’s VJ model he accuses us of just being afraid of it.
Ok then just for a minuet lets say Michael is right. The end is nigh and like some twisted version of body snatchers the VJ takes over every newsroom in the world. Assuming there was some court order forcing me to work VJ what skills do I need to do to prepare myself for Michael’s vision of the future?
Well I don’t need to learn how to shoot, I’m already way better than any VJ I’ve ever seen.
I don’t need to learn how to edit I can do that ok.
Telling stories? I do that all the time.
I don’t need to have lessons in reporting I’ve been around the best for 20 years.
I’ll never be as good as a trained journalist but little of what the VJ’s spew out could be accused of being journalism so no worries there.
In fact I don’t need to do anything to prepare for your future Michael. I could VJ tomorrow if I had to.
So why does anyone need you Michael? Where are you in this future aside from sell people stuff they don’t need. Telling us we can downgrade our skills any time?
Your vision of the future newsroom has no fear for me Michael, disappointment and frustration at the stupidity of it but no fear.

I don't fear it, I could do it tomorrow. I just think it's a bad idea for the business of professional journalism. Especially when he tells prospective clients that crews on the street consist of 4 people... huh? well... maybe 3 people... huh?
we do it with a crew of 2.
you gotta have a team to do the daily turn thing. But don't ask mike about daily turns, that doesn't fit into the prism he's manufactured. I kind of see the VJ system as similar to a cubic zirconia, fake.

More like Mikimoto pearls, pried open up & stuffed in, artificially created -- yet demanded to be accepted as real.

If I were to bring crap to an employer, the employer would say, "That's crap! Do better or get fired!"
Michael, however, brings them crap and convinces them it's not really crap, but a new aesthetic not bound by the stuffy outdated rules of the 50s. Then he starts saying, "You can save 60-70%!" And their eyes glaze over. Suddenly they realize it's okay to suck if you're saving money in the process.
Later they realize they aren't saving money. Then they realize they suck. It's a terrible time to be them.
But Michael doesn't care, because he has their money and has moved on to the next victim.
That's all they need Michael for: to give them an excuse to suck. At least until reality catches up with them.

but who's the idiot here: Michael, or the employers who give him money for his idea?

But is Michael smart for floating this idea? It depends on how you look at it. I suspect that the majority of people who read this board are intelligent enough to have come up with something similar. What Michael has that they lack is an absence of a moral compass. I doubt most of the people here who could come up with such an idea would go around the world selling it to people when they knew it wouldn't work. I think many here would consider that fraud.
No, I don't think this proves that Michael isn't stupid. I think it suggests instead that he's merely unscrupulous.

Yes..yes...
everyone on this board had exactly the same idea. It was only I who was immoral enough to actually go market it.
What a terrible person I am.
sure... whatever...
spike man, you live in some weird and delusional world.

It's not Mike's fault that stations are run by corporations that only care about their bottom line and not their overall product.
As such we've been hearing the "this is coming, prepare or die" mantra for YEARS now, but still the only stations really giving this an honest try are KRON and WKRN. Others have one or 2 VJ's augmenting their traditional staff (and this makes perfect sense - get an extra camera or two on the streets to cover fluff and other mindless stuff for a fraction of the cost of a traditional crew) but certainly not the "revolution" we were promised would happen.
As such, I really don't think we have anything to concern ourselves with. By the time VJ truly grabs hold of the US market (at this rate anyway) I'll be too old to get out of bed in the morning without hurting myself - therefore it's a non issue for probably most of us here.
But it IS fun to hear him prattle on about it I suppose...

if a station's goals are to decrease staff and cut costs, one could argue his idea works just fine.
as for the unscrupulous/fraud part, it's hard to judge that.
I don't know the guy at all.
but he'd hardly be the first person in history to market something as being better than it really was.

At least Spike isn't gonna cost anyone their job.
Can YOU make that same claim?

Yeah
In fact, I would say that I have created far more jobs and opportunities than.. well you for sure. I have employed several hundred people over the past 20 years in a business I created from nothing and with no help from anyone. And you? Great complainer, but I dont see much else. Typical.

if a station's goals are to decrease staff and cut costs, one could argue his idea works just fine.I'm going by Michael's own performance claims. Michael says that for the system to work, you can't decrease staff, or else the quality and quantity of the product will suffer too much. But he also claims the stations will see a 60-70% reduction in cost, which CANNOT happen without reducing staff. There's an inherent contradiction, which he constantly tries to shift around in his sales pitch like an elaborate shell game.
He knows the contradiction is there, because people have repeatedly pointed it out. Yet he continues to pitch his scheme as if it weren't. That's dishonest at best, and probably fraud.
Like I said, most of us here are smart enough to perpetuate a fraud. Any one of us could make a lot of money tricking people into buying used cars that are lemons. Most of us simply have more integrity than that.

Yet another pointless great complaining employee.
If you are going to slander me, why don't have the courage (integrity, basic decency) to sign your name?

And by the way, slander is something that is untrue. What have I said about you that isn't true?

Get real, Mike. As much as you'd like to think that bumping these lame topics to the top of the list helps your image, folks actually read the comments.
Watching you duck out of explaining why you so carelessly toss around the label of antisemitism explains more about your character than any sales pitch ever will.
I don't think I've ever known someone so ignorant in my life.

Typical.Mike, once again you shift focus away from the original issue. No one here is debating your ability to sell your product and make money. And, in the future, I'm sure you'll employ hundreds more considering the turnover you're sure to experience by hiring college kids for ramen wages to work on your hyperlocalwhatever thing you're doing.
What is being discussed here is the fact that you still have not answered some very basic and simple questions. As a former journalist yourself you should know that when a person refuses to answer such basic questions it is usually because they are trying to hide something they don't want you to know. Is it any wonder then that you would catch hell from the people here when you dodge questions? These are not accountants and managers you are talking to in here. These folks are mainly current and former photogs, reporters, and producers - folks that know all too well what it really takes to run a newsroom. You *might* want to consider the very likely possibility that these people know this business pretty well, and are asking these questions because they know what the answer *should be* - therefore they can tell by your answer (or even the lack thereof) if you truly know what the hell you're talking about or not. And it's pretty painfully obvious to even the dullest tool in the shed, that you don't have the first clue.
You further solidify that opinion with every "coward" and "anti-semite" remark you make. Now I'm sure you're wearing very expensive shoes and maybe even get a pedicure now and then but even so I'm sure your shoes and feet don't taste all that great. You might want to consider taking them out of your mouth and actually answering some real questions once in a while instead of spewing the latest trendy buzzword or dropping the names of famous people who, if given the chance, would have had nothing to do with you. It's getting old and we all see right through it.
You could also, preferably, just go away. That'd be fine by us too.
