Typically how much commission do agents charge when, instead of finding you a new job, they simply renegotiate your current contract?

Whatever you allow them. Remember, YOU are the boss in that particular relationship, since your contract with them usually expires with your work contract. Unless you're depending on them for serious career-building or major revisions, aren't they worth the same as what you'd pay a labor attorney to review paperwork?

Agents are great if and when you need them to get the gig, but are you comfortable paying them what amounts to a car or house payment if they do hardly anything?

Agents are certainly willing to chip in here, it'd be interesting to hear some justification on that lon-term commission.
