Online Video: Bank Standoff Suspect Shot (http://www.whas11.com/video/index.html?nvid=169880&shu=1)

I'm anxious to read your thoughts.

Personally, I felt the video out of the open was handled well, with the image "stilled" as the audio continued. I also had no problems with the digitized images that were aired only after an appropriate warning. However, my wife was nearly outraged by the video. Her objection centered on concerns for the family and friends of the man who was shot. She felt the video was an example of a station touting tragedy, rather than using necessary images to illustrate a difficult story.

It was interesting to hear the perspective of someone who consumes news, instead of collects it. I'd also be interested to read everyone else's reactions.

I should add WDRB had a similar angle and faded its video to black as the audio of the gunshots was heard.

I was able to watch the first link but couldn't find it on the FOX link. Yes, it would be very tough to see if I were a family member of the man shot.

It doesn't seem to me that the police gave him much time to declare his intentions. Yes he did move toward them but it appears that there was some distance to cover before he became a real threat to anybody.

This would have been a perfect opportunity to use non-lethal force to bring down a suspect. If the same number of bean bags had hit him as shots I really believe he would still be alive today.

If the same number of bean bags had hit him as shots I really believe he would still be alive today. He had plenty of time to declare his intentions. When he was on the phone with the police, said he was coming out with the gun. The police said to not come out with the gun. He said he was going to come out with the gun anyway.

When someone is running towards me with a gun, I'd rather be packing more heat than a beanbag. A beanbag round isn't very accurate more than roughly 20 feet anyway.

Textbook "suicide by cop".

I agree with how the station handled the footage (especially the still shot with audio).

(edited for clarification)

Sorry, dear, I'm no fan of the police but if you run at the cops with a gun you're asking for what you get.

The police and the t-v station acted appropriately. No offense, RollTide, but your wife is way off-base on this. TV was supposed to tell the story about the guy getting shot as he ran at the cops but not use the video? To suggest those images weren't necessary for the story is ludicrous.

And Clever: I didn't say I agreed with my wife. I was just interested to hear her thoughts. She's 30 years old... career woman... our target demo... and I often bounce ideas, etc. off of her to see what she thinks.

Great video, but it's a shame that the footage had a big blur right when the man got shot. I know the photographer is bummed out.

OK, it's been a while since I've been "in the field", but last I knew, police wouldn't let media or the public anywhere they could be "in the line of fire".

Now granted, this could have just been shot with a long lens, but where the reporter was doing his stand up (and said that's where the photographer was) was at the edge of the parking lot.

Does that seem strange to anyone else?

I'm curious ... as a general statement ("no fan of police"), why not?

I think they're kind of handy to have around.
