Santa Barbara... paradise!! Grew up there. BEAUTIFUL city. One station, KEYT, ABC affiliate, in town. CBS is in Santa Maria, about an hour north. NBC is in San Luis, about a half hour north of Santa Maria. LA is about 2 hours south. SB is right on the beach, Santa Ynez mountains (to about 4000') right behind the city. Spanish style architecture (sp?) makes the city gorgeous. A little fog in the summer, a little rain in the winter, otherwise perfect weather. Real estate is outrageous expensive... forget about buying unless you're independently wealthy. Rent is pretty expensive, too. I've never been inside, but KEYT is up on a bluff looking over the city and the ocean... could be the most ideal location for a station, beauty-wise.

From Wikipedia:
Santa Barbara was an American soap opera which ran on NBC for 2137 episodes from July 30, 1984 to January 15, 1993.
The show covered the exciting, eventful lives of the wealthy Capwell family of Santa Barbara, California. Around the Capwells there are several other families, from the rival Lockridge family to the more modest Andrade and Perkins families, whose lives know the same torments.
Santa Barbara is notable for having a central plot around which many of the others revolved: the murder of Channing Capwell Junior. This killing takes place some five years before the series actually begins, at which point Joe Perkins, jailed for the murder, is paroled and returns to Santa Barbara determined to prove his innocence. Over the course of the soap, almost every major character would be accused of the murder of Channing Capwell Jr or find their life involved in it one way or the other: from his illegitimate son to his mysterious, presumed dead, mother and his homosexual relationship.

This is one of the most expensive places to live in California and to top it off, the stations pay in sunshine. If you can handle a very, very tight budget you might be able to pull it off.

I know Santa Barbara's main newspaper is a pretty miserable place to work right now. (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=18&entry_id=6845)
Santa Barbara is one of the great places to live in the state but you pay the price. The station doesn't have a lot of resources and is not heavily relied upon by the network. They don't have an uplink at the station or a SNG truck. Some of the reporters now working in larger markets including L.A. are KEYT alumni.

It's been more than 15 years since I worked at KEYT.
The station had a round studio and a newsroom with views of the marina and the town.
They used to put the weather guy in the parking lot with the ocean behind him. Move him 10 feet and get the marina behind him. They had an elapsed-time camera pointing out the newsroom (glass) door at the marina to get the fog burning off in the morning.
I remember thinking that no matter where I went after KEY News that the view would suck. I was right.
I was surprised at the level of hard/political news in an otherwise sleepy town. Not much crime, but plenty of politics.
Now that Jacko has left the area, the bizarre news is gone.
UCSB is a few minutes north of town. Plenty of college action if you like that sort of thing.
The cost of living is outrageous. Fortunately I had a friend with a vacant condo as he was working out of state for 18 months. He didn't trust renters and knew I would keep the place intact. Free rent in Santa Barbara... Pretty sweet!
There are some great restaurants in town and the beaches are nice.
Does Paula Lopez still work there? Does she still warm up by singing arias outside the station before the newscasts?
The station had the coolest bumper stickers that I have seen: "News Happens!"
