Dayton over all is considered by many a stepping stone. They have plenty of crime to talk about on a daily basis... which will make you a pretty good tape and get you some solid experience. Like most places, you are expected to do more with less... so on most days you'll have to pull at least 2-3 pkgs.
WHIO was considered the 400 lbs gorilla in the market, but there numbers have been dropping over the past few years. They are still #1
WDTN is a solid number 2, aspiring to be #1, but still a good ways off. Pay there tends to be equal to if not better then WHIO
WRGT/WKEF is a Sinclair owned station... trying hard... but the owners are killing them with low wages and cutting full-time to part-time positions... even with main anchors. #3
Dayton has its bad areas (East and West side) but some nice suburbs too... Oakwood, Kettering, Beaver Creek just to name a few. The downtown is trying to improve.. but will take time... at least it looks as though things are moving in the right direction.
Night life... not bad at all. The Oregon District is sorta the party area of town. Some nice bars and clubs. But what is really nice is the proximity to other cities... Columbus 1.5 hours... The Queen City 1 hour (Cincy), Indy 2.5 hour drive, and Cleveland about 3-4 hours away.
Anything else I can help you with, pm me

I will say this... there is crime on a daily basis... its very rare that you dont have some kind of shooting or robbery to cover, but its mostly isolated to the eastern & western burbs.
Dayton doesn't have the best rep (which is deserved)... but in my time here I've found that things are much better then I expected.
If your looking to start a family, housing is pretty affordable (can get pretty nice place for around 200K), and schools (as long as you pick the right community) are pretty good.
Hope this helps!

The crime is bad. There's a shooting about every other night. There's a lot going on which makes for a great news market. WHIO is the leader.
