Okay, Jose Padilla is making news again, and I keep hearing his name pronounced "Puh-dillah". The only one I saw use the proper pronunciation (Pah-deeya) was Molly Hennenberg on FNC. As many hispanics we have in this country, you would think more "journalists" would know such things.

What gives?

Oh, I thought we were talking about Derek Jeter and A-Rod.

But the over-pronunciation thing can go a little far. For instance, the dude that looks like Skelator on ESPN News (the name escapes me) over-pronounces every Hispanic name, even ones like David Ortiz. "Dah-veeeed Orrrrrteeeeezzz." David Ortiz doesn't even pronounce his name like that.

I tend to turn the channel when he's on.

Padilla pronounces it Puh-dill-uh. That's why most news people pronounce it that way. If he pronounced it according to the Spanish pronunciation, we would go with that instead. But in general we pronounce the name the way the person him/herself says it.

Especially when we're in San Pedro.

And by the way, if you were correct, it would be "ignorant yanquis."

Don't you remember when Padilla's lawyer made a big stink about this?

It was stressed - very clearly - that Padilla pronounces his name puh-DILL'-uh.

As stated above, pronounce it the way the person himself/herself pronounces it. If they want to pronounce Jones jo-NEES', that's up to them.

While we're on the topic...

If you're ever covering a sporting event in a little stadium on the plains of Auburn, Alabama, it's not pronounced "Jordan-Haire" as in Michael Jordan. It's pronounced "Jerden"

As in Shug Jordan, Auburn legend.

But with all that said, why be at Jordan-Haire when you could be at Bryant-Denny?

Oh, right...

I think either Jose or the lawyer is just *****ing with the media's collective mind.

This whole conversation seems a little weird to me, because I was under the impression that if you were an Islamic fundamentalist, you would want to use your Arabic name from that time forward (like Yusuf Islam, aka Cat Stevens). Why does he go by Padilla at all?
