View Full Version : Snow Algorithm Fixed

Everything seems up to par... Haven't regenerated our WRF yet tonight, but I have a "normal" workday tomorrow so that should be back. In the meantime, GFS & NAM data is being run through the Cobb Snowfall Algorithm, output at http://66.70.209.226/weather/snow/klan.txt
List of sites at http://66.70.209.226/weather/snow/output.txt -- just sub one of those in for klan in the first URL and you should be alive...

And of course I have a script made so that you can type in your 3 letter id and it will give you the results!

I've had no returns on KMOT or SLN all day. Some other stations are working though....
EDIT: ...and now they are working just fine! ;)

Not sure I understand... I go to the first link and I see NAM & GFS for LGA, I go to the second and I see NAM & GFS for FDY. That appears to be the way it should be?!?

I'm with you Rob.
I went to kfdy.txt and got "StnID: kfdy" and I went to klga.txt and got "StnID: klga"....values are different and appear to be from NYC and Findlay, OH respectively....

When the new models are coming in, sometimes for about 10 minutes or so, you type in the station ID, and a different geographic site comes up...
I think that is what NE is pointing out.

Hey Rob...when you get the chance, can you add AZO? Thank you sir!

I'm on the road for a few but will get things added this weekend. Due to the large number of things my PC is doing, there are times when it first updates that it gets station ID's discombobulated. But that usually clears up within 10-20 minutes.

Hey, Rob...
I've been having more and more problems with this lately where I pick a station (e.g. lga) and another sounding shows up... The problems have persisted for more than the usual 10-20 minutes.
Any chance you can look under the hood?

I took it down again, I'm trying to do too much on this box (use it operationally for GEMPAK analysis, generate 100+ bufkit soundings, generate the snow soundings, running WES for post-case analysis, and now running a hi-res WRF for our WSI box to display) and for some reason the snow one is crippling me. Something in perl is hanging.
I'm going to start from scratch after lunch and slow add things back in until I find the culprit.

Thanks Rob... I too was having problems with entering my station and another one coming up.

Rob,
Any chance the soundings will be fixed over the weekend... We have a big p-type nightmare here this weekend with low thicknesses but a warm boundary layer.... Cold advection right at the time when the lift is disappearing...
Yuk.
Once again, I appreciate all you do with these... I have found it to be the most useful operational forecasting tool since the actual advent of BUFKIT.

Added BWG & AZO per above request, those will be available with next run cycle.

I was plugging in soem locations for this and the start date is yesterday. is there a problem with the data?
rdale
Dec 11th 2007, 10:03 AM
My machine slows to a crawl on some runs, so I'm keeping the local ones actives but the national dataset is going to be intermittant until I can fix things... I'll force it now to see what that does, so check after 1930Z.

heard fantastic things about this algorithm..too bad its down :-(
If its not too much to add it to the data load could you put in KBGR KBHB KCAR and KPWM..sorry.. big state..also if youre having overload problems i should be getting an old linux box that i was going to use for my web page..set me up with the needed files to run your gig.... and ill let you ftp off it...who knows could be worth a try..dont know how much of a strain it will put on my bandwidth though..i have a 3 meg line and if its only you yanking stuff off it shouldnt be all that bad...
edit: turns out it wasnt down..switch of computers seemed to remedy the problem of it taking forever to load...ftp offer still stands though!

I do, but they have double-firewall action going on, and it's too much of a hassle to get in. And then there's a little less leeway for me using their computer and web resources, especially since it offers nothing to TV6 viewership ;)

Wherever you were going to start, go to the opposite end first. You'll always find them in the last place you looked.

rdale, I might be game on this. What models are included in this package? WRF/GFS? Just for people like me who are curious: other than getting the snowfall output in text/grid format, how will the data that can get ingested into BUFKIT be different than the NAM/GFS BUFKIT files you can get elsewhere on the web (say, from PSU or local NWS pages)?
rdale
Dec 5th 2009, 10:31 AM
WRF, GFS and RUC2.
The BUFKIT files in the end will be the same that you get elsewhere. They should be a little bit faster, but the whole intent is to also have the Cobb snow output. So look at the first link here - if you like that sort of thing but want it more reliably and/or for locations not currently being output, then this would be for you.
Wx Chick
Dec 5th 2009, 12:13 PM
Theres also a site that an ISU student made that tends to be pretty reliable...and has a graphic representation. I've found that not many people know about it yet...
http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ckarsten/bufkit/data/index.html
Click on a site, and there are links to the bufkit profiles... click on the "view cobb output" for cobb data, or visualize data for the graphical representation.

I wouldn't be going through all the hassle of writing new scripts, setting up a website, and plugging it for a total profit on the order of 47.5 cents per year if I knew this was out there.

Any chance of altering the weather by doing the upgrade? ;) The current version says I'll get freezing rain...and well...I don't especially care for an ice storm...Give me snow, or give me rain..just not ice!

The output was being generated from an older version that was incorrectly triggering the rain/mix, so snow totals may have been overinflated in many cases. I've just sent Chris the latest version.
