A couple of other posts have talked about "who taught you what you know?"

So...who is it? We all, most likely, have learned more from our mentors than any textbook.

Mine:

Merril Teller and Gary Shore

I grew up in NYC so I watched Tex Antoine, Gordon Barnes and then Alan Kaspar and Joe Witte.

Actual mentors a few: Two of my college professors, Bill Kaciak the founder of Weather Routing, which was one of the first ever private weather consulting companies in the US and the first to offer ship routing services and to Bill Korbel, whom I interened with (neweatherman is BK still at your shop?)

As far as actually working with
the guys at KSN in Wichita
Mark Bogner-who got me excited about weather when he talked to us in 1st grade and I got to work with him during an intership

Dave Freeman-who taught me A LOT about this biz

he's not there anymore but Dave Schaffer who is an excellent forecaster and always told me to look at actual observations before ever looking at any model

and I know he's on here sometimes and never posts but Matt Sayers in Lawrence who taught me how to present in front of the camera

First got me excited about weather: Paul Douglas

Watched religiously and finally got to intern with...taught me a lot about the basics of TV: Tom Clark

One of my peers that I always looked up to and admired on many levels: Sean Sublette

I would have to add Dr. Joe Sobel, Elliot Abrams and Joe Bastardi as major influences and mentors in my first few years of my weather career. They taught me invaluable lessons about forecasting, inter-personal relations and how to be an entertaining broadcaster.

Thanks to all!

I grew up watching Denny Frary and Joe Winters at KCRG, and they originally got me interested in weather. Steve Templeton was the catalyst that made me realize I wanted to go to ISU for Meteorology when I was a junior in high school. The entire crew at KCCI and KCRG has helped me so much for teaching me about the business, giving advice, and weather stuff while I interned there. Dave Flory at ISU really lit a fire under me (figuratively speaking of course ;) ) back when I was a sophomore in the first hard-core meteorology class and has been someone I trust for advice. Les Lemon and John McLaughlin played a big part in my thesis. For any success I have in the future, the credit goes to these people. graemlins/icon_pray.gif

He took me in as a freshman in high school. Thanks to Tim giving me an early start, I had 9 years of internship experience before I got my first job!

Because I had an early start thanks to Tim, it gave me the opportunity to work closely with, Elissa Lynn, Roger Evans, Mike O'Lenick, Josh Linker, Dave Towne and of course John McLaughlin. All of them took a lot of time to help me become who I am. Finally, Ryan Burchett taught me how to be a good chief and run the weather office once I was part of one.

I will never forget Sam Scaman out of Minneapolis. If were not for him, I would not be were I am today, and that's the bottom line. He did such a great job telling the weather story, something I try to remember each and every time I go on air.

If it wasn't for Sammy, I would have never had such a sweet internship. If it wasn't for him, I would have never applied for my first job. If it wasn't for him, I would have not had faith in myself when all those first doors were slammed in my face.

I can't say enough about these two.

My first job out of college was under their wings, from '04 - '06 -- and I'm still laughing because of the not-too-distant echoes of Fred's comments.

Fred and Paul are two of the wisest meteorologists - and scientists - I have ever met. I owe what I know about forecasting to them -- the classes they taught -- and moreso, the experience working with them every day for 2+ years with the New York Times project & Weather World.

My others:

Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz -- (grew up watching, interned, 2002, WCAU) -- he taught me to "have fun" doing what we love to do.... but to respect and embrace the science behind meteorology

John Bolaris (grew up watching, interned, 2002, WCAU & spent some time with on a few of my midweek 'weekends' in the summer of 2006 - when he was at WCBS) -- his delivery is smoother than silk.... tremendous example to learn from

Doug Heady (current chief, KOAM / KFJX) -- Doug has a tremendous knack for excellent graphical transitions in putting a great show together. ..... More importantly, I've learned a ton about how severe weather cut-ins & wall-to-wall coverage should go through his example. (Can a mentor be 3 years older than you?)

... great thread ...

Still at Channel 6 last I knew. He's one of Busby's flockers so in a way I got some of Busby's wisdom. Back's fine which is surprising how little sleep I've got in the past few days.

Matt is a great guy, I graduated with him. He is out of the bizz now and married.

I have really enjoyed reading this thread, and I'm surprised that nobody else has named my mentor. David Letterman! It sounds funny at first, but seriously...it reminds me that I could always be replaced by clown (even if I like him) if management thinks it's a good idea.

Brian Wilkes at WXIN in Indianapolis for me. I was his first intern when he became chief. It turned in to more of an apprenticeship for 2+ years. He and I are pretty good friends today.

Also Tom Skilling and Dr. David Arnold (formerly of Ball State and Miss. State).

Lol.. I love that movie.

I'm gonna have to throw another movie in here though.. Chuck Taylor. Long time meteorologist @ WHAS11 in Louisville. Just search YouTube, and you'll find him. He was a great guy. RIP Chuck.
