Al Bedo

Tony it was all FM.

I was pulling in Des Moines, Kansas City, Sioux Falls, Sioux City. I did some dabbling around for it tonight and found stuff on tropospheric ducting and "e-skip," which is what I think I experienced. It made for an interesting commute in though.

We're pushed back to 7 PM because of golf. Wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have to tape weather plus at the normal time. I'd get to come in an hour later...

Watching some storms now, but nothing looking extremely severe here in central PA. Few T-Storm warnings but they have been out of the viewing area.

Storm Sentinel did pick up on a TVS for 1 frame, but that didn't pan out either...

I'M BORED!

Got some good hailers down my way..Good number of Pulse Severe storms across GA and the Carolinas..Impressive rain totals showing up on the 88-D (upwards of 4 to 5 inches this afternoon in some areas)...I imagine these are significantly overdone due to hail contamination, but some of these have had quite heavy rains in the same areas for several hours...Wouldn't be surprised to get 3 to 4 inch confirmed rain totals in a few areas..lots of clouds around the first half of the day to limit heating (or else it could have been a really interesting day for hailers)..Sheer relatively weak so all of these have remained single to multicell..no sustained meso's

TT82
May 12th 2007, 03:18 PM
Playing around with storm sentinel now...

I have storm totals rainfall accumulation on. I am wondering how I figure out how much rain has fallen based on radar estimates. I have the colors starting out as a light blue, going to a darker blue to a light green and a darker green. I just don't know how to figure out rainfall estimates.

Any ideas?

Why is it that all the contrail sniffing sub-humans think that "nobody knows about it"; it is the most famous phantom I've ever come across.

I've never thought of humans as acting like sheep but they do. They say the same crap, they start by asking for information and then drift toward fighting.

I'd rather fight with the idiots that complain about a cut-in, even if it is brief. They are selfish, but they possess a mind. I'll take arrogance over a stupid arrogance any time.

There ... much better.

So what is up with that OK tornado watch? nothing at all has erupted yet...watch was issued at 4PM...it's now 6:30 with a setting sun and just a line of cu.

Had to revive the Diner's Club...

Talk about a boring night. I guess anything is more boring than Friday night. We got hit by lightning and took us offline. We came back up a minute later, but the weather computers went down. This was right at the end of the 6. I was shouting t-storm warnings to our chief sitting at the 4-shot at the desk. We didn't have commercials either because the back went down. Fun times.

Now, I'm just sitting here twiddling my thumbs for a few minutes before we go on.

Wow...that could add some stress to the whole situation. I've delt with rain fade stealing all of our data...but never a lightning strike.

As for here tonight...not too boring yet...we have had a good sized storm stalled out and hailing golfballs on one poor town for nearly an hour.

TT82
Jun 10th 2007, 05:40 PM
Ya. It was definitely stressful... but we live for this stuff...

We were watching storm reports on :LIVE and up popped a report from NE Ohio about 3 Miles S of Akron of 4.25" Hail!!!

Tonight, we're clear.

On a side note...
Our sports guy's last regular weekend shift is tonight. He's moving to Charlotte. We're losing a part of our weekend crew. Since I've been here, that's the third person we've lost from the weekends... one was an anchor and the other was a fill-in sports. Sucks to see him go, but good for him. I'll be here at least another year.

Making up for being behind the curve yesterday, I guess.

It is not so now...but for most of the evening the majority of the warnings have been outside of the watches. What could have been a fun exciting evening has turned into a major bore around here...and there is not even anything good on TV.

Its over now, but I recommend Friday Night Lights. They moved it to Sundays for the summer.

I also like Brothers and Sisters, which should be coming on now, I think.

Ahhhhhhh!!! Went to get a haircut and eyebrow fix up today...my "normal" stylist is on vacation so I had the appointment with someone else.

They butchered my eyebrows!!! I obviously can't paste them back on...so now I am stuck with a ultra huge gap between them. I'm not really someone who cares much about how I look...but this is really embarrassing.

Just had to get it off my chest, not that it has really made me feel better about it though.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Someone share in my frustration!

The GAIM setup with the NWS is great (thanks RDale!), but I get the feeling that at the TV Stations, we are treated more like spotters to get reports, as opposed to colleagues.

Case in point... we had severe thunderstorms throughout the region today. At one point, we had a storm moving through our county bringing 3/4" hail and wind gusts near 70 mph. 4000 people lost power. I informed the NWS that there was a severe thunderstorm, and I was thanked for my input, but no warning was posted for that county. Warnings were posted for other counties in our area at the time, and I was busy doing cut-ins anyway. I still treated the one storm as if it were severe, but I am still rather upset.

Thanks for your input? Am I not as capable at determining what's going on outside the door as they are 60 miles away? It's not the first time I, our other members of our team, have been treated this way. I just wonder why.

We should do as we do and let the gov't boys do as they do.

I can recall more than a few times where we went on air with legitimate severe weather and our local office didn't respond UNTIL AFTER OUR cut-in.

Take solace in the fact that you did what you are supposed to do and you fulfilled your mission statement.

Similar vein, twice our Baron's indicate strong shear in a storm with a TVS and the local office didn't change their severe thunderstorm warning until we were almost done with our cut-in, if then.

A lot of times, the NWS is a lot like the way TV (management) is, they want YOUR loyalty but you get NOTHING in return for it.

I am usually the first person to come out and defend the NWS with things, but not in this instance. We had a storm that we (fous and I) submitted plenty of reports for....which gave NWS ample time to issue a SVR for it. Instead...the NEIGHBORING office issues a SVR for their county, but polygons it so that it covers HALF of the county next to it in the CWA where the warning should have been issued. So we proceeded to send them damage reports. Not a single mention in the LSR...not even a "Trees/wires Countywide!" I'll bet they don't want to verify that they messed up. This was a big mistake on their part, IMO. I even left a note in the IEM Chatroom saying "XXX, check your storm report inbox. I sent a bunch down." graemlins/face_banghead.gif

Mayhem
Jun 29th 2007, 12:37 PM
Yah... no damage reports for our county where the severe storm was (without the warning). Not even power lines down even though 4500 homes and businesses were without power for hours, even days for some.

As an aside...the last thread about the NE Ohio cold wave that turned into a debacle had me pondering this. With MySpace...I do have a profile (to keep in touch w/ HS/college friends), but I have it set to private so that only people I approve to be friends with can see...and to that extent, I have absolutely nothing "incriminating" on there for those who are friends with me to see. With all the bad publicity MySpace gets, does even having a profile look bad, even if you do everything right?

I know many people, including myself, that set it to private - or friends only - just because you want to be comfortable with what you post or who posts on your profile.

Especially for you guys/girls in the media, private is probably the best way to go, unless you truly don't care who sees your profile.

I do it because I want to control who sees pics of my family, who I'm friends with and the like. Just more for the peace of mind, I guess.

I keep my profile private for the most part, but very few can see my pictures on MySpace or Facebook. I've heard some bad stories recently of people/viewers seeing pictures of things like houses on air or via the web and then driving to find them. It is kind of creepy.

At least they are still young enough to where any computer time they do have is usually playing their Backyardigans video game or watching Star Wars-related stuff on You Tube - while I'm right there.

I worry for the day they're old enough to surf on their own.

As for me - my family is all from Brooklyn after coming off the boat a few generations back. But, there is a very large, prominent family that lives/lived in this area and I often get asked if I'm related to such-and-such.

I say no, but it's nice that they can not only spell it correctly, but pronounce it correctly as well. When I lived in Lincoln, they butchered it both ways beyond belief! graemlins/eusa_doh.gif

Brooklyn,

I have the same thing up where I live now.

Two contingents of families with the same last name- as mine- both claiming that I am a relative

One group is Portuguese descent, the other is Italian, which I am.

When my folks were live, I asked them if these "folks" up here were related, to which I got an emphatic "No."

But to this day they both still consider me a "family" member.
