WSI can build a script of some kind to bring the datat in, read it and display a map... Wx channel does it and so does the Air Force (behind the scenes scripting)...

Agreed - it would be nice to have an "autoplot" flight delay map. I used to be a BIG supporter of WSI and their products, but as of late, I feel that WXC is gaining ground on WSI. When you look at what WXC has to offer and then compare their products/services to WSI, WXC is the clear winner!
Any word on the Prism upgrade? Wasn't that supposed to come out in early 2007?!
Finally - an odd problem with our temperature maps: sometimes they will report temperatures in Celsius. WHY?! They are set up in our parameters to report Metar/ASOS/SA, etc., in degrees Fahrenheit! So why do some of them report in Celsius ... at random?! Anyone else having this problem??

We have the Prism upgrade and it's a big improvement but can be unstable when you're adding tasks.
It's really easy to push to the web with Prism.

Lest I launch into my WSI rant again, here's the best I've come up with:
Plot the airports you want to use by using text: The Wingdings font has an airplane symbol in it... I want to say it's 'C' or 'Q'? Once you find it, position as desired, then set up a wizard to adjust the color code to your liking.
You can either do current delay conditions, a la the FAA site, or forecast potential trouble spots like the Weather Channel does.
Of course, making it automatically plot would be an even better option... graemlins/face_banghead.gif graemlins/face_banghead.gif graemlins/face_banghead.gif

Prism turns your TrueView HD into a digital publishing engine, helping you produce weather content for automatic distribution to platforms like cell phones, laptops and PDAs. Now your weather news goes everywhere your viewers do, making it more valuable for viewers and sponsors alike. Prism turns every new digital device into a potential revenue stream.

I heard that too...except you won't be able to do it with that many files as it will slow the system down. You wouldn't be able to get rid of the SEB on the Producer completely.
That's a shame. Although the Producer still has many features that ShowFx doesn't have...

Ag, please be careful with that statement. It all depends on your system configuration (how many boxes and what you're using them for) and what model Dells you're using.
Depending on the scenes involved, Prism can handle a good load of stuff. And on a 690, I have been able to configure a wide variety of Prism stuff and still have SEBs running too.

I have an airport delays script (which pulls the data) and scene (for basic display on an earth) which is ready for use. I realize that with Thanksgiving upon us, this should get some heavy use in the next week and again for the Christmas rush.
Before I give you instructions on how you can acquire this, please read CAREFULLY:
***The script and scene are provided to you AS-IS. This script is not offically supported by the fine folks in WSI Customer Support. If you call them asking how to fix it, they will not understand what you are referencing and unfortunately WILL NOT be able to provide assistance for it at this time. Any questions will be directed to me via PM, and I will answer them as I have time available.
By submitting the information requested below, you are agreeing that you have read and understand the above statement, and have shared this information with your staff.
That said, if you want this script, please send me a PM with the following information:
--Your name
--Station call letters
--Email address
I will place these scripts on systems in the order in which I receive the requests. Again, I will be doing this on my downtime. I will make every effort to get to you as soon as possible, but please be patient and understanding. After all, I can't have my turkey ruined. ;-)
Additionally, this is only available for DELL users right now.
Thanks,

Looks really good 50, do the delays just pop in on the showfx scene when they occur? Of course nothing out there early this morning.
FunnelChaser
Nov 21st 2007, 06:00 AM
South side, not to step on 50%'s territory here, I just don't know when he'll be on here today...
You have to open Show FX on your producer machine and render it there. When you do, you'll see the delays on there. If there are no delays "0" is displayed in the box. If you open the scene on the Show FX box you'll have blank boxes with no data for delays.
50% - It looks fantastic. More things like this and it will remind folks why they went with WSI as their vendor.

50 -
Awesome product. Just a thought ... would it be possible to throw in some "if - and - when" statements to the script, so that when travel delays are "0," the font color is GREEN? When the travel delays are "30," the font color is YELLOW? When the travel delays are "60," the font color is ORANGE, and when flight delays are larger than "60," the font color changes to RED? Just a suggestion.
I love the product, though, and I'm glad you created it for us!!
Have a great Thanksgiving!

It definitely reminds me of a Weather Channel scene. I'm not questioning it though!
MU_WX_Grad has a great idea for the color coding. I'm sure our friend 50% will work on that in the future!
50% - Is there anyone we can send our thanks to at WSI for your hard work? I'd love for them to realize it is things like this that make the clients happy.

+1 on the awesomeness of the scene. Thanks again 50!
There does actually appear to be a bit in the script to colour-code the numbers, but I'm not sure why it's not making it into the final product.
Just because I'm a geek like that, I'm going to try a little hack to make it work on the Director. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Thanks for the positive feedback, folks. Glad to hear it's meeting your needs.
Notes:
1) It only works on the producer now because I had it the datafile outputting to a non-shared directory. I will change this to Exports_1.0/Custom going forward so the scene can be used on all boxes (I don't know why I didn't do this in the first place -- tunnel vision I guess). For those of you who already have the scene, I will push down a modified version at some point and let you know...but for now just stick with it.
2) The color-coding idea already exists in the script as this was being worked on by the aforementioned fine CSR folk for another project. The color coding in the script isn't for Showfx; but there is a way to do it. That'll be for the "v2.0" of this scene.
3) Don't forget that the scene is a template and can be spiced up to conform to your look and needs. You may wish to change the fonts (multiple select them in the stack editor) to match your look (although I chose a generic helvetica so it would at least not stick out like a sore thumb). You can also in the same manner change the colors on either of the polygons (I only keyframed the 'size', not 'all parts', so there's no need to add/remove keyframes to do this either). Don't forget to add a banner too. MU_WX_Grad even added a radar layer -- which I think is a nice effect. Just put it on the surface (as opposed to above surface) so it doesn't interfere with the boxes.
Thanks again for your feedback. I'll be working on some more requests for this script shortly. This is the last day to get it in before the holiday -- otherwise I can't guarantee that I can get it into your systems until after Gobblefest.

I have been out of loop for a few days. First off, thanks a ton 50%!
Right now I see the airports and blue boxes. I want to make sure I know what I am looking at. Will the box change color for a delay, or will a number appear in the box or what? Right now they are all blue and empty, so I just want to make sure everything is working.
Do I render it in ShowFX? Just want to make sure I have everything set properly. Thanks!

Mayhem: You should see numbers in all of your boxes.
Make sure you are doing this on your PRODUCER system.

Edited: Looks like everything is correct. So I'm guessing you're not looking on your producer system.

BSU's right -- it means ground stop. Since that's more important than an average amount of delays in my mind, 'stop' will take precedence. Once the ground stop is lifted, it'll go back to the delay number.

I had the boss ask us the same thing the other day. Called WSI (JEFF) He loaded an entire series of auto-plots for every major airport in the US with Base Map - We addedd a RADAR 5-Minute behind it and it works great. Map has 4 built in moves from the East, to South, To Mid-West to SOUTH/WEST Coast. A simple render it SHOWfx and it works great. It taps into FAA reporting sites... all show "0" which represents 15 minute or less delays... goes up from there... Enjoy.

There is a way to plot airport delays from WSI. They have a Show FX scene that they can download to your computer. It will show an FAA delay in minutes from major airports. The data comes in a CSV file at :19: 39: and :59 after the hour. However, it only shows major airports. If you want other airports, you have to call WSI and convince them to add your airport. That's what I had to do. There are were only about eight airports on their list in the entire western United States.
You don't have to use the Show FX scene from them, you can just take the data and plot it on a map or blank background.
Any questions, find me.

Huh? I never had a problem getting through, they were the first I know of to do remote desktop to get right in, to systems so I didn't have to describe every click I was making, and whenever I've needed some sort of code tweaked Tony was always around to do it. Baron and WxCentral both had great tech support.
Maybe it was just the types of questions we asked...
