Does anyone have a short (just a couple page) hand-out pre-made that they'd be willing to share or at least share a part of? I just was drafted to teach some Girl Scouts about weather early this week with little time to prepare. Thanks for anything you can provide... and if you want to email me anything just go ahead and send it. Thanks again!

Try giving them hand-outs of prices of cookies that you're selling. And make them feel guilty if they don't buy anything too. :D

Seriously Whiskey, how about a hand-out with some basic weather terms or pictures of cloud types with a brief description. When I give skewl talks, I show my storm chasing footage b/c that's what the kids like.

On topic:

Sorry Whiskey, I got nothing as far as actaul print outs...Just as a wow factor I usually print out some MOS data, meteograms, raw data, surface charts and show them only a few things I look on a daily basis. I don't try to explain anything too much on them, just as something that goes as part of the behind the scens part of the job.

Off topic.... Forget the Girl Scout cookies that you get once a year...Bruesters Ice Cream has my 2 weaknesses combined as 1!!! Thin Mint Cookies and Ice cream...Yes ladies and gentlemen...THIN MINT ICE CREAM!! http://bestsmileys.com/drooling/3.gif

Thin mints and peanut butter sandwich cookies are regular orders for me. I still say that they should open stores in malls so we can get our fix year round!

Since everyone of them is probably online often enough, that might be a good place to point them.

And, of course, if you feel like it, how to contact you at the station if they wish to ask more questions.

Hey, does anyone have access to weather videos for use in school weather talks? Just looking for nothing longer than 10 or 15 minutes with the usual weather elements; clouds, lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, etc. If you know of a place where this can be ordered that would be great. Or, if you have a great video if I could get a copy that would be excellent. I would pay for all shipping cost. Thanks.

I posted this a looooong time ago. Since then I wrote my own hand-out and talked to the girl scouts. It was a good time, but their leader-woman kept trying to teach about weather too - all the wrong stuff. That was pretty frustrating, as I had to keep politely correcting her when she'd try to monopolize the teaching.

I nice handout showing how the affects of global warming will destroy the Earth before they are 18 would be nice.

Show them NYC, Miami, Houston, SF, LA, and Seattle under 200 feet of water, show Northern Alaska as a rain forest, the central plains as a huge desert with all cities wiped out by by EF 15 tornado's and ECAT 15 Hurricanes, the Great Lakes emptied, and finally, the Mountains of Denver totally eroded by snow melt.

Come on...
Make Gore proud!

Don't know about the handout, but how's this for a title: 10 ways the weather can KILL YOU AND YOUR WHOLE FAMILY

You can then go into details (complete with video) to show flooding, mudslides, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.

Then as the previous poster suggested, a nice wrapup on how global warming and/or a giant asteroid will wipe out the human race and how it could all happen as soon as tomorrow should have the little tykes hiding under their beds in sheer terror that night.

Yeah I'm sure the scout leader and the parents of the girls would get pretty pissed off but on the bright side, I bet they won't ask you to do this again. ;)

I've talked to many girl scout troops...SevereClear is scared of little girls and passes them on to me. The kids don't want your visit to be like a class. I just do my regular severe weather safety schpill and throw in a little about day-to-day stuff. I try and stress the importance of science and math and answer any questions they may have. I have found that most leaders will invite the younger troops and a few boy scout troops, too, so I never know who will show up. But, if you REALLY are determined to bring handouts, try some of these publications from NOAA...
