Money and salaries are never what you dreamed they be, but suck it up and live within your means....to be 24 and making 24K and still needing help from Mom and Dad....
I think you need to look at what is important...you can make it on less, the question is are you trying....
I don't feel sorry for those of you who overextend yourself, thinking that becasue you are on tv you need to live high on the hog....

Hey, Small Market!
$24,000 at age 24 in a small market is actually pretty darn good.
Mom and Dad need to take the silver spoon out of your mouth - and quick!
Try market 173, $18,000 at age 27 then you have a beef.
Moved on to market 70+ at 28,000 then 32,000 after two years.
It doesn't get better as you get better - that's why I got out.
For now live within your means. You don't need new furniture and coordinated Ralph Lauren bedding. You can splurge on that later. Right now all you need is groceries, gas and a car that you're not making payments on.

I don't know how 1979 dollars would translate into 2002 income, but for what it is worth....Mon-Fri 6 and 11 wx in a 50s market...$8,200.00... after 21 years in top 10 the pay is a bit better....but as an older guy whose been around a while...let me tell you newbies that it's got to be more than just about big bucks and big contracts and perks....because where ever you go in this business...no matter how successful or or highly compensated you are....you will still have to deal with morons and cold hearted bean counters....having a nice portfolio is NOT the benchmark of success in this business.....family, friends, self-respect and respect of my peers is more important to me than the bottom line....and don't go saying..."oh it's easy for you to say"....

I started as a camera op about a year and a half ago at $5.50. Left, after learning some tape editing and did a website for the station, left at $6.50. (This is in market 130-somthing).
Took a new job as a prompter operator in a near-30 Market and started at 10.50/hour w/benifits. Been working there for about a month, and have started training on Web, Kyron, and Directing (rumored that my pay will double, at the least, if I become a part-time director).
Who says a minor position like teleprompter won't present you other things later on?
