He's different than the cookie cutter kind of sports guy. His demo tape was creative and quirky. I hope he lands a great gig. Lame you say? No. Quirky? sure.

I LOVE it!! It was funny, showed off his personality, and it was something DIFFERENT.
If i were a news director I would watch the entire tape, then I'd call him for an interview. That's the point right?
And guess what? You just gave this guy a ton of publicity. Hope he's not your competition.

All I know is every news director I've talked to laughs at tapes that have voiceovers or anchors who say "I want to work for you!" News directors don't want gimmicky. They can spot the bozos a mile away.

Maybe that's why you are a "producer babe." What else do you do when you have that much great stuff as talent? That was fun... and more importantly, really solid.

That was a great tape! Very entertaining! It kept my attention the whole time and thinking "this guy has fun"!

Very nicely done. As much as I hate this phrase, it shows he thinks "outside the box". Different is what you need to get noticed, and he's shown some creativity and ingenuity ... and I have a sneaking suspicion that producerbabe is actually Dave Benz (or a good friend of his) floating this out there to see what kind of reaction he'll get from the board.

Wow. This guy sold me in the first 30 seconds. Creative and energetic. Most sports tapes are a chore to watch. Not so this time.

Nothing wrong with an opening montage - most of the tapes that come into our station have an opening montage. But putting it to music? Considered a no-no. And over 2 minutes long? Most say keep your montage to about 60 seconds tops. I found the whole thing pretty silly, but hey, if it works for him.

That's the problem with reporters and anchors, everyone wants to copy what's established. This guy makes his own rules. As long as his outfit get's away without paying mucic royalties that works just fine. That's not so good for news but this guy's doing sports. Music has always been a part of sports.
Everyone in news has turned themselves into hardass white bread like my pal, Bob Woodruff. He's the perfect cookie cut anchor. That needs to change as our audience needs entertainment too. Shep Smith on FOX has style, he breaks the mold with his humor.

Perhaps times have changed. Had a news director once tell me he would trash all tapes that had loud music tracks on them or glitzy, overdone productions. He said, I'm not hiring for MTV, show me you can write and report.
Luckily, I got the job. smile.gif

He did a good job with it. Music under and voices over montages are generally no-no's but if you can pull it off -- IF -- the reward might be worth the risk of breaking the rules.
(Hint: If they'e laughing but not laughing at the parts that were supposed to be funny, you didn't succeed.]
Here's my main concern: In more than two-and-a-half minutes, I learned only that he can creatively package what is obviously his favorite topic (himself). He offered no other evidence that he can craft a story about any other subject.
The thing about your resume tape is that if you have the goods, you don't have to tell me you have them, you can show me.
Back when I did sports, my montages showed you how much talent (or how little) I had in half the time. You didn't have to take my word for it, it was right there for you to see.
You can still see examples here (http://www.johnmcquiston.com/video.html).

I love it at the end when he says "Enjoy watching the rest of my tape" after like a 2 and a half minute montage bit. Enjoy watching the rest of my tape.
Priceless.
Sorry, I just love making fun of terrible tapes.

It's more a joke if you know about the guy. Do a google search, you'll learn more than you did in that 2:30 montage.

WHAT ABOUT the kids singing "Sesame Street" in the background w/ the little kids in the pool?? He and another guy drop their shorts...in front of the kids!
YUCK!

I did the google search and now believe this guy would make ten times the money he'll ever make as a TV sports anchor/reporter in entertainment. He needs to get his ass out to LA get his face out to the talent managers, agents and casting directors. He should also do the comedy clubs.
He is wasting his time kissing the asses of news directors in order to eat and have a roof over his head. The financial reward in TV news is dwindling every day.
This guy could write his own ticket just like Jimmy Kimmel has in entertainment. Most people don't know that Kimmel writes most of his own gags.

I agree with John M. The tape is very nicely done and slickly put together, but it has the feel of "all sizzle and no steak".
In 2:30, you could at least show me some reporting. Maybe cut the montage down to to 1:00, and then a good 1:30 pkg.
Again, I like the way the thing was put together, the music and all that was great, but, doesn't an ND want to see a little bit more than a slickly produced montage?

Ms. Producer, I'm betting you're Benz in real life.
It's a cheap ploy, but clearly, it worked.
It's a good tape for a medium market.

So far, I am not impressed with any part of you, NYProducerBabe.
Real big-time producers in New York don't have insecurities.
And I still think you're a man in disguise.

The unlicensed music is a significant copyright violation - but since when has that ever stopped anyone in TV?

OK, here's my bias. I deal with agents and news directors constantly. That said...
NYProducerbabe is 100% wrong. Like most people who are confronted with something new and different, her first instinct is to dismiss it, her second instinct is to ridicule it, and her third instinct is to ridicule the person behind. She is wrong on all three counts, Nothing for her to be ashamed about, all she's dong is showing that in any given situation, she's more likely to be closed minded that open to new ideas. That's just her way.
But a person open to different ways of thinking, and more importantly, who knows what a resumé tape is supposed to do will will see that this is a great tape.
A resumé tape has one purpose. Pique your interest. That's it. This tape, unlike most I have seen (well into the hundreds) kept me watching all the way through. I promise you that any sports director, news director or general manager will watch most of it as well. In less than a minute it showed me the guy can edit, write, do live shots, desk work and field reporting. It took ten seconds to show me this guy has a voice all his own. And after that minute I kept watching. Most tapes cannot do that.
Take note, THIS IS NOT A NEWS TAPE. I recognize that. News tapes have a different purpose. You need to be a lot more serious about your work. But sports, in today's world is a different beast. You are part of the cast of characters and the sports guy needs to have a personality all his/her own. This gyy is polished and competent. At least, he is on his tape. That's enough to make the callback list.
Our friend NYProducerbabe misses the mark at her peril. It's such an ivory tower opinion, I'm amazed she's in the day to day world of news. I can see her saying she doesn't care for the style, but to say it's a bad tape? Hardly. It shows off her lack of understanding what a good tape is supposed to do far more than the any shortcomings of the tape itself.

If there is anything true about this business it's that it's like Baskin Robbins - 31 flavors and then some. But as someone in charge of watching many of the tapes that come in and then passing them on to our big guys, I really recommend you can:
a) write hard news & fluff
b) show that you're capable of not just going live, but 3 or 4 different types of lives
c) not just a talking head who loves watching him/herself on camera (see above example)
Off to get a tan!

It definitely got my attention, which I believe is what a resume tape is all about. Someone is a fantastic editor that's for sure.
Plus it's a visual medium and he's hot. Call me Dave! ;)

I enjoyed it. The tape is creative and got my attention. It may be a little long, but it shows the guy is creative and different. I'd interview him (if I was the one doing the interviewing).

This thread should be required reading for anyone putting together their resume tape for the first job. THERE IS NO ONE WAY TO PUT TOGETHER A RESUME TAPE. That said, no one tape is going to please everyone. Some will look at it and think it's great, others will say it's not. No news director is looking for the same thing in a hire.
