We need this thread to keep going!
The bastards at TVJobs have been collecting salary info for TWO YEARS now and haven't posted a damn thing. I sent them info from my last job but won't send another until they post their hoard of info. What a fraud.
I haven't posted here because I fear another low salary post won't help any of us in renegotiations, but here goes...

I'm a high school weight training and driver's ed teacher who makes 62K and gets every weekend off, long vacations during the holidays and a month in the summer. My girlfriend is an anchor, so her situation like so many others listed here is one I'm quite familiar with. I applaud anyone who can put up with the stress, little appreciation, low-pay for time committed and overall chaos of TV news. I don't envy what my girlfriend has to go through in exchange for what she brings home on her paycheck.

You don't want to know. . . but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Meantim, it is a sad commentary on this this business that so many people work so hard and make so little.
When that guy without a high school diploma

works better hours and fewer of them,
it's a little scary.
Keep digging. It does get better.

Is there really any room for negotiations these days? I don't think anyone anywhere, in the very best of conditions would agree to nearly double my pay. Not unless I could prove I'm worth it (I'm not THAT bad, but I don't know if I'm that GOOD, either). Would an agent be helpful in this case?

if you're a woman... they probably low balled you. They were able to pay more but suckered you in.
Not your fault... they do it all the time.
Now ask around, but do it descretely, don't let the management know that you know or who told. But make sure your wage is comparable to your co-workers in similar positions. A past co-worker of mine discovered a huge gender bias at our old station. Wish we could have sued.
I got snookered too. When my new ND hired me he said, "We can pay you 28k and since it's a union shop there's not much room to negotiate." Well it was $10k more than I was making - and where I wanted to go - so I took it.
Found out later that the Union line was a lie. Told our steward who said that the Union sets the minimum... not the high end. the union is ticked about this underhanded tactic.
It's supposed to be based on years experience and I qualified for $32.
I got low-balled but I know better now.

here's a question. i know it depends on ownership, budget, etc.... but we have a position open at my station for a startup 10:00 newscast. the position would be a solo anchor gig, with daily reporting for the early newscasts (5:00 pm and 6:00 pm). we already have an 11:00 pm newscast but i gues my nd wants to bring in a separate face for the 10:00 show.
how much do you think it would pay? it's a top 40 market.
bippy
Jan 20th 2002, 12:14 PM
It would depend on how much experience the person hired has - obviously the ND would like to pay the least amount he/she has to. It also depends on how badly the person being courted wants to take the job. I know someone who works in that size market at a comperable job - he gets 47k/49.5k/max out 3rd year at 53k..but he has outs in the third year. On the other hand, I know of some who've gotten screwed b/c they don't know better (now it's too late to haggle). I would guess that position should get 40k to start - even though it's a start up, it's a main show and that person will have a lot of responsibility. Anything less than 40, IMO, means the person's getting royally screwed. But, what else is new?

"Attention Anchor/Reporter" you posted you make 70k as weekend anchor in a 50's market... can you give a little bit more detail to the market size? Low 50's, middle, or high? That sounds like a pretty good deal compared to what's being offered now. How long have you been there?
